The attack on the Wheeler house

The Demogorgon comes through the ceiling; Holly runs to take shelter with Karen, who was about to take a bath. The lights flicker, Holly's nose bleeds, and both hide under the bathtub water when the creature smashes the door. Ted, alerted by the lights, comes in with his golf club: the creature throws him through a wall, into Mike's closet. Cornered, Karen smashes a wine bottle and hits the monster with the shards. Warned by Will, Eleven and Nancy arrive: Karen is bleeding, Holly taken. Nancy pushes Eleven to go after her, and Eleven dives through a portal into the Upside Down.

Eleven and Hopper facing the wall

In the Upside Down, Eleven runs into Hopper, wounded, furious that she exposed herself while the army is hunting her. She treats his wound; he admits he is afraid of losing her as he lost his daughter. They follow the creature's trail to an immense, impassable wall, which the Demogorgon crossed with Holly. Neither of them can break through it. In Hawkins, Dr. Kay watches the Wheeler house cameras and sees Eleven with Nancy: for her, Eleven is tied to the attack.

At the hospital

Mike and Nancy regret never having told their parents the truth. Why Holly? Nancy remembers a vision Vecna had shown her in 1986: her parents and Holly, dead. Lucas notes that the kidnapping falls almost on the anniversary of Will's disappearance. Mike figures that Mr. Whatsit, the imaginary friend, may be real, and knows where Holly is. Lucas, for his part, begs Max to wake up: the final battle has begun.

Elsewhere, Steve and Jonathan argue, about Nancy and about what each has been doing since the return from California, until Dustin arrives, wounded, and Steve scolds him for missing the Crawl.

Will: Vecna's eyes

On WSQK radio, Will explains that he was in the Demogorgon's mind during the convoy attack: he is still connected to the hive, despite the break with the Mind Flayer three years earlier. Robin proposes using him as a receiver to locate Vecna; Joyce refuses. Will and Robin go around her and go back into the woods. At the school playground, Will has a vision and understands: what he was seeing was Vecna following Holly. The bond shows him the next targets, and a name: Derek Turnbow.

Robin and VickieRobin asks Will if he saw her with Vickie at the hospital, and talks about “good friends” whose relationship could be misunderstood. Will says he saw nothing. The scene prepares the one where Robin will help him, two episodes later.

The last scene: Henry

Mike and Nancy slip into Karen's hospital room. From her bed, she tells them what she has understood: Mr. Whatsit has a real name, and Holly said it. His name is Henry. In Vecna's mind, in his human form, Henry Creel welcomes Holly into his home: the Creel house.

Behind the scenes: “the craziest cold open” of the show

Written and directed by the Duffer brothers, the episode opens on the sequence of which Ross Duffer said, before release, that it was their maddest opening and one of the scenes they were proudest of. Matt Duffer specified that they wanted an attack on the Wheeler house since the first season: the most ordinary house in the show, the one of family dinners and the D&D basement, finally becomes a place of terror.

The title is a direct nod to the very first chapter of the show, “The Vanishing of Will Byers.” Nell Fisher, who takes over Holly, learned during the table read that the episode bore her character's name; she had met twins Anniston and Tinsley Price, who played Holly in the previous seasons, to prepare the handoff. Matt Duffer had spotted her in the Evil Dead Rise trailer, because she reminded him of Sadie Sink as a child.

Cara Buono, Karen's performer, expected to stay the slightly clueless sitcom mother; she discovered she would get her “badass mom” scene. She worked the storyboards and the previs with the stunt teams, and spent a day with Nell Fisher timing how long each of them could hold her breath under the bathwater.

What the episode changes for each character

Character Before the episode After the episode
Holly A little girl with an imaginary friend Abducted into the Upside Down, then welcomed by Henry in the Creel house
Karen The housewife on the sidelines Wounded, but she faced a Demogorgon with a broken wine bottle
Ted The father who plays golf Thrown through a wall, into Mike's closet
Eleven Barred from the Crawl by Hopper In the Upside Down of his own initiative, facing the impassable wall
Hopper The protector who refuses any risk He admits his fear of losing Eleven the way he lost his daughter
Will Convinced he has cut every bond with the hive He understands that he is seeing through Vecna's eyes, and spots the next target
Mike and Nancy Two older siblings who hid everything from their parents They regret the silence, and get from Karen the first name “Henry”

Three things to note for later

First, Lucas notices that Holly's kidnapping falls almost on the anniversary of Will's disappearance, in November 1983. It is not by chance: episode 7 will make November 6 the date Henry chooses to act.

Second, Nancy reminds Mike of the vision Vecna had imposed on her in season 4: her parents and Holly dead. What the monster showed as a threat is coming true, which pushes Mike to take his little sister's imaginary friend seriously.

Third, Dr. Kay watches the Wheeler house security cameras and sees Eleven there with Nancy. From then on, the army has a concrete lead, and the season's hunt is no longer a matter of suspicion.

TakeawayThe bathroom: Karen, the broken bottle, Ted through the wall. Eleven and Hopper stuck in front of the Upside Down wall. Will understands that his visions are Vecna's; Derek is next. Mr. Whatsit is named Henry.
