Vecna is the main antagonist of season 4 of Stranger Things, and the true face behind everything that comes out of the Upside Down. His real name Henry Creel, he was born human in 1947, grew up in Hawkins, became subject 001 of Dr. Brenner's lab, then was banished into a dimension that turned him into this hooked-finger creature. Who is Vecna?
Before being a monster, Vecna is a little boy from Nevada. Henry Creel is born in 1947, son of Victor, a former soldier, and of Virginia. In 1959, the family settles in Indiana, in Hawkins, in the big Victorian house fans today call the Creel house. That is where everything turns.
Henry is not a child like the others. He discovers he can enter people's heads, see their fears, and move objects with his mind. He does not suffer this gift, he loves it. He kills his mother Virginia and his little sister Alice, stages a curse that eats the house, and lets his father Victor take the fall. Victor is arrested, then committed. Henry, for his part, slips into a coma after pushing his powers too hard.
Dr. Martin Brenner recovers the child. Henry becomes subject 001, the very first test subject of the program that will later give Eleven and the other numbered children. His powers are held back by a chip implanted in his neck, the Soteria. As an adult, he works at the lab as an orderly, among the children whose nature he secretly shares.
The name “Vecna”, for its part, does not come from Henry. It is Dustin Henderson and Eddie Munson who give it to him in season 4, in reference to an undead wizard from Dungeons & Dragons. The nickname sticks to the creature, and the rest of Hawkins adopts it.
The real Vecna, the one from the gameIn Dungeons & Dragons, Vecna is a wizard who became a lich, an undead creature of which only a hand and an eye remain, two legendary artifacts players fight over. The nod is precise: Henry too is a man who refused to die, and who commands from a distance.

Vecna season by season
Vecna only appears in the flesh from season 4, but his shadow hangs over the whole show. Here is his path, in the order of the story, not in the order of broadcast.
1979The lab massacre
Henry bonds with little Eleven, the only child in the program who is like him. He manipulates her into removing the chip that holds his powers back, without telling her what that will trigger. Freed, he massacres the other children and the lab staff. Eleven understands too late, faces him, and beats him by drawing on a happy memory of her mother. The blast opens a passage: Henry is thrown into the Upside Down. The lightning and the atmosphere of the dimension burn him, warp him, and make him the creature we know.
1983 – 1985Seasons 1 to 3: the invisible enemy
During the first three seasons, nobody says his name. Yet when Will Byers vanishes in November 1983, when the demodogs invade Hawkins in fall 1984, when the Mind Flayer takes control of Billy Hargrove in summer 1985, the same hive consciousness coordinates the creatures from the shadows. Season 4 will teach us whose consciousness that is.
1986Season 4: the curse of Hawkins
March 1986. A high-school girl, Chrissy Cunningham, dies in Eddie Munson's trailer, her body broken from the inside. Fred Benson follows, then Patrick McKinney. At each death, a gate opens between the two worlds. The group understands the plan: four portals, and Hawkins tears apart. The designated fourth victim is Max Mayfield, haunted by the death of her brother Billy. She escapes a first time thanks to the music, but not the second: her heart stops, the fourth portal opens, and Eleven brings her back just in time. Max survives, in a coma. Hawkins is cut in two by a rift.

1987Season 5: the last chapter
November 1987. Vecna no longer hides. He abducts children from Hawkins, starting with Holly Wheeler, Mike and Nancy's little sister, to make them the vessels of a world reshaped in his image. The army locks down the town, Derek Turnbow is targeted but saved, and the group discovers the Abyss, an intermediate dimension born of the first contact between Eleven and the Demogorgon. The show finally turns its master card: as a child, in a Nevada mine, Henry touched a stone inhabited by an entity. He was never the master of the Mind Flayer, he was its vessel. Will Byers, linked to him by thought, begs him to resist. Henry refuses. In the last chapter, Will immobilizes him by telekinesis, Eleven impales him, and Joyce Byers cuts off his head with an axe.
Powers and curse
What makes Vecna terrifying is not his strength. It is that he does not need to come looking for you: he waits for you in your head.
He reads thoughts, but above all wounds: grief, guilt, shame. He chooses his victims among those who carry a trauma, because that is the crack he enters through.
On the physical plane, he lifts, throws, breaks. That is how his victims end: hanging in the air, bones reversed, eyes gouged.
He creates visions in broad daylight. A grandfather clock that chimes, hallways that do not exist, dead loved ones who blame. The victim loses the thread of the real.
From the Upside Down, he commands the creatures like the fingers of one hand: Demogorgons, demodogs, demobats obey a single will.
The remedy exists, and it is beautiful: the music. A song the victim holds onto with all her strength opens an exit in the vision. For Max, it is a Kate Bush track she plays on a loop on her walkman. For one summer, the title became the anthem of a whole generation of fans.

Not to be confused
Three creatures, three natures. It is casual viewers' number-one mistake, and it deserves to be settled once and for all.

Vecna is not the Mind Flayer: the first is a transformed man, the second is an entity that contaminated him as a child and of which he became the body. Vecna is not an adult Demogorgon either, despite the resemblance of the raw flesh: the Demogorgon is an animal of the hive. Vecna is its thinking head. And Henry Creel is not Eleven's father, contrary to a theory that circulated for a long time: he is the first test subject of the program, she is the eleventh.
Last mix-up, more subtle: Vecna is not the name the character gives himself. He has never claimed that nickname borrowed from Dungeons & Dragons. For himself, he remains Henry.
