Max Mayfield in Stranger Things

Character · San Diego skater · Seasons 2 to 5

Spoiler warningThis page tells Max's whole path, through her waking and the last chapter of season 5. If you have not finished the show, stop after the “Who is Max” section.

Max Mayfield is the skater from California who lands in Hawkins in the fall of 1984, and the character who carries on her shoulders the hardest season of Stranger Things. New to the party, Billy Hargrove's stepsister, Lucas's girlfriend, she becomes in 1986 Vecna's target and survives her own death. This page brings together everything: her origins, her four seasons, the curse, the coma, and what season 5 does with her.

Who is Max Mayfield?

Before she has a face, Max is a score. In the fall of 1984, an unknown name, MADMAX, smashes every record at the Palace Arcade, including Dustin's. The boys go after the mystery player and run into a girl on a skateboard, new at Hawkins middle school, who has no desire to be adopted by a pack of kids who follow her everywhere.

Max comes from San Diego. Her parents divorced, her mother Susan remarried Neil Hargrove, a hard man, and the blended family left California for Indiana. With them came Billy, Neil's son: an older stepbrother, violent, who takes out on her the brutality he suffers from his father. Max learns early to stay quiet, slam doors, and ride fast.

That is what makes her immediately different from the others: she has not known the Demogorgon, she does not believe the lab stories, and when the party finally tells her everything, she is mostly offended that they took so long to trust her. She will become, though, season after season, one of the hearts of the group, and Eleven's closest friend.

Why “MadMax”The handle comes from George Miller's Australian film, a lone hero on the roads of a ruined world. Max gives it to herself before she even knows that one day she too will run, through a devastated landscape toward a light that is pulling away. The show never explains the nod: it lets fans notice it.

Max season by season

Max Mayfield: The Palace Arcade (Stranger Things)
The Palace Arcade. The first place in Hawkins where Max exists, even before anyone sees her face: three letters at the top of the board.

1984Season 2: the new girl

Max arrives at Hawkins middle school in October 1984, a few days before Halloween. Lucas and Dustin fall for her, Mike rejects her: for him, Eleven has vanished and nobody will take her place in the group. She finally enters the party through the side door, when Lucas tells her the truth about the Upside Down. She goes through the season resisting Billy, who forbids her to see her new friends, up to the scene where she takes him down herself, a syringe and a nail bat in hand. At the Christmas dance, the Snow Ball, she dances with Lucas and kisses him.

1985Season 3: the summer of Starcourt

Summer 1985, Max and Lucas are together, fight, break up, and get back together at a pace that exasperates everyone. Her real story this season is her friendship with Eleven: she teaches her to pick her clothes, to say no to Mike, to exist without him. And then there is Billy. Possessed by the Mind Flayer, her stepbrother becomes the creature's weapon in Hawkins. On July 4, in the Starcourt mall, Eleven gives him a happy memory of his mother, Billy breaks free and sacrifices himself to protect her. He dies in Max's arms after apologizing.

1986Season 4: the curse

March 1986. Max lives with her mother in the Forest Hills trailer park, has left the group, listens to her walkman on a loop, and writes farewell letters to each of her friends. She has never gotten over Billy's death, or the guilt of having been able to do nothing. That is exactly what Vecna is looking for. Headaches, nosebleeds, nightmares, then the clock: she understands she is next. At the cemetery, in front of Billy's grave, the vision takes her; her friends put the headphones on her ears, and a Kate Bush song opens a way out. She makes it through a first time. In the Creel house, she offers herself as bait to draw Vecna; he breaks her, takes her sight, and her heart stops. Eleven starts it again. Max survives, blind, in casts on all four limbs, plunged into a coma. The fourth portal has opened.

Max Mayfield: The letters (Stranger Things)
The letters. Max writes one for each of her friends, just in case. Lucas's, we will never know what it said: he refuses to read it as long as she is alive.

1987Season 5: the waking

Eighteen months later, in the fall of 1987, Max is still in a coma. Lucas spends his days at her bedside, reads to her, talks to her, puts the song back on. What nobody knows is that her consciousness is not gone: she is trapped in a mental space made of Vecna's memories. That is where she meets Holly Wheeler, Mike's little sister, abducted by Henry. Together they find a way out, and Max wakes. She does not stop there: she goes back into Vecna's mind of her own will to help the others get out. The last chapter shows her graduated from Hawkins High, still with Lucas.

What defines her

The skateboard

Her way of fleeing, before being a way of going toward others. She rides through the middle-school hallways, in the Starcourt parking lot, in the streets of Hawkins. When she stops, something is wrong.

Straight talk

She tells Eleven she has the right to choose, Mike that he is unfair, Lucas that he is too slow. She is the one who puts the words the others avoid.

Guilt

The engine of her season 4. She believes she wished for Billy's death, she watched without acting. Vecna does not create his cracks: he finds them.

Music

Her walkman is armor. The song she plays on a loop in 1986 literally becomes the rope that holds her to the world.

The detail nobody noticesIn season 2, Max takes Billy down with a sedative syringe, then holds Steve's nail bat to keep him at a distance. It is the first time a kid from the party hits an adult. Two years later, she is still the one who volunteers to face the most dangerous creature in the show. Max's courage is never loud: it consists of staying when everyone else would leave.

Key moments

  1. The arcade leaderboard

MADMAX at the top of the screen, Dustin devastated, Lucas fascinated. An entrance without a face, the best on the show.

  2. The syringe

At the Byers house, in 1984, Max plants a sedative in Billy's neck and makes him promise to leave her alone. She is fourteen.

  3. Shopping with Eleven

Two girls in a mall, trying on clothes and laughing. For Eleven, the first normal afternoon of her life; for Max, the birth of her best friend.

  4. The cemetery

In front of Billy's grave, she reads her letter, the vision takes her, and she runs. The headphones, the song, the light: the most watched scene of season 4.

  5. The bedside

A teenager who reads out loud in a hospital room, for eighteen months. The start of season 5 sits in that silent shot.

Not to be confused

Max concentrates a few stubborn misconceptions. Here they are, corrected.

People often say In reality The landmark
Max and Billy are brother and sister She is his stepsister by marriage: Billy is Neil's son, Max's stepfather's son No blood tie, and a house where nobody forgets her
Max dies in season 4 Her heart stops, Eleven restarts it; she survives in a coma Season 5 opens at her bedside
Max is possessed by Vecna She is cursed, not possessed: Vecna attacks her mind, he does not inhabit her body The possession is Will (1984) and Billy (1985)
Max wakes thanks to Eleven She finds the way out herself, with Holly Wheeler Eleven fights Vecna, Max frees herself on her side

One last one: the song that saves her is not a track written for the show. It dates from 1985, the very year the story is set, and it is a British hit by Kate Bush. Which did not stop the title from going back to number one on the charts in summer 2022, thirty-seven years later, thanks to Max.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Max in Stranger Things?

Maxine “Max” Mayfield is a teenager from San Diego who moves to Hawkins in 1984 with her mother, her stepfather Neil, and her stepbrother Billy. A skater, arcade champion under the handle MADMAX, she joins Mike's party in season 2 and becomes Lucas's girlfriend and Eleven's best friend.

Does Max die in Stranger Things?

Almost. In the Creel house, in 1986, Vecna breaks her and her heart stops for about a minute, which opens the fourth portal. Eleven starts it again. Max survives blind, her limbs broken, and stays in a coma for eighteen months. She wakes in season 5 and finishes the show alive, a high-school graduate.

Why does Vecna go after Max?

Because she carries a trauma: Billy's death in front of her at Starcourt, and the guilt of having hated him. Vecna chooses his victims among people eaten by a wound, enters their mind through that crack, and uses each death to open a passage between the worlds.

Which song saves Max from Vecna?

“Running Up That Hill”, by Kate Bush, released in 1985. When Max is taken by the vision at the cemetery, her friends put her headphones on her ears; the song reminds her who she is and opens a way out. The scene put the title back at the top of the charts in 2022.

Is Max possessed like Billy?

No. Billy and Will were possessed by the Mind Flayer, which inhabited their bodies. Max, for her part, is cursed by Vecna: he attacks her mind from a distance, through visions, without ever entering her. That is why the music works as a defense: it brings Max's consciousness back into the real.

How does Max wake up in season 5?

Her consciousness is a prisoner of a mental space built from Vecna's memories. She meets Holly Wheeler there, abducted by Henry, and the two find a way out together. Lucas, who has never left her bedside, and the song he gives her on a loop help her find her body again.
