Who is Lucas Sinclair?
In the Dungeons & Dragons game that opens the show, Lucas is the ranger: the careful warrior who lights the path and shoots from a distance. The role sticks to him. When Mike brings an unknown girl into his basement, Lucas is the only one to ask the obvious question: what if she was lying? He is wrong about Eleven, he will admit it, but he is right to ask. That is his function in the group: the one who checks.
Lucas lives with his parents, Charles and Sue, and his little sister Erica, in a house in Hawkins. He is the most organized of the group: binoculars, camouflage bandana, wrist-brace slingshot, backpack ready for an expedition. When the others improvise, Lucas already has a plan, and he has generally written it down.
What makes him endearing is that he is the only one who has to choose, season after season, between two belongings: the party and the basketball team, Mike and Max, the Hellfire Club and popularity. He sometimes picks the wrong side. He always ends up coming back.
EricaLucas's little sister, ten years old in 1985, became in one season one of the most loved characters on the show. She crawls through the air ducts of Starcourt to infiltrate the Russian base, joins the Hellfire Club in 1986 as Lady Applejack, and tells everyone what she thinks. Lucas may be the big brother: she is the one in charge.

Lucas season by season

1983Season 1: the skeptic
Lucas wants to look for Will, not keep a runaway. He argues with Mike, fights with him, and goes off alone with his binoculars to spy on the lab. He finally understands that Eleven lied to protect them, and holds out his hand. In the classroom, facing the Demogorgon, it is his slingshot that fires first, and that is not enough. Eleven finishes the job. Lucas is the first to mourn her.
1984Season 2: Max
A new girl arrives, a blunt-talking skater, and Lucas falls in love without knowing how to say it. Against Mike's advice, he tells her everything: Eleven, the Upside Down, the Demogorgon. Max does not believe him, then believes him. He faces Billy, Max's stepbrother, in the Byers kitchen, and survives thanks to Steve. At the Snow Ball, Max kisses him first.
1985Season 3: the couple
Summer 1985, Lucas and Max are the most turbulent couple in Hawkins: breakups, makeups, absurd advice given to Mike on how to treat girls. He goes through the battle of Starcourt alongside his sister Erica, promoted to spy, and watches Max lose Billy in her arms.

1986Season 4: basketball and Hellfire
At Hawkins High, Lucas wants to be popular. He joins the basketball team, and on championship-game night he chooses the court rather than the Hellfire Club's Dungeons & Dragons game. When Chrissy dies and his captain, Jason Carver, launches a manhunt against Eddie, Lucas understands which side he is on. He rejoins the party, protects Max whom he has never stopped caring for, and in the Creel house, while Vecna breaks her, he fights Jason with his bare hands. Max dies in his arms. Eleven brings her back. He will not leave her bedside again.
1987Season 5: the bedside
Eighteen months. That is the time Lucas spends with Max, in a coma, reading her books, talking to her, putting her song back on. When Hawkins goes under quarantine, he protects her from the demodogs at the hospital with Robin and Vickie. When Max wakes, it is in part because he never stopped talking to her. The May 1989 epilogue shows them together, graduated, and still just as loud.
What defines him
He is wary of Eleven, he chooses basketball, he hesitates with Max. Lucas always needs to check before he believes, and that is what makes his commitments solid.
He shoots a Demogorgon in 1983, demodogs in 1984, Jason Carver in 1986. A child's weapon, in the hands of the one who aims best.
Three breakups with Max, and he comes back every time. Eighteen months at her bedside. Lucas does not let go of what he has chosen.
The little sister who outdoes him in everything. Their duo is the comedy of the show, and its truth: Lucas learns from her as much as he protects her.
Key moments
-
The binoculars on the hill
Alone, in 1983, Lucas watches the lab and sees the vans leave. He has broken with Mike, he has not broken with the mission.
-
The offered hand
In the middle-school hallway, he apologizes to Eleven and holds out his hand. She takes it. The party is complete.
-
The Byers kitchen
Billy lifts him by the collar and slams him against the wall. Lucas does not look down. Steve arrives just in time.
-
The Snow Ball kiss
Max kisses him first, on the dance floor, under the lights. The only moment of season 2 when Lucas no longer knows what to say.
-
The bedside
An open book, a chair, headphones on Max's ears. Eighteen months summed up in one shot, at the start of season 5.

Not to be confused
| People often say | In reality | The landmark |
|---|---|---|
| Lucas betrays the party for basketball | He misses a role-playing session, then comes back as soon as Chrissy dies | He fights his captain for Max |
| Lucas and Max break up for good | They break up in 1985 and 1986, and are together in 1989 | The epilogue |
| Erica is Dustin's little sister | She is Lucas's sister | The Sinclair family |
| Lucas kills Jason Carver | No: Jason dies cut in two by the opening of the rift | The Creel house, 1986 |
A rarer confusion: Lucas is not the “warrior” of the group, despite his gear. In the game, the warrior is another role. Lucas is the ranger, the one who watches and shoots from a distance, and that is exactly what he does for five seasons: see before the others, and stay back to cover.
