Who is Dustin Henderson?

In the Dungeons & Dragons game that opens the show, in November 1983, Dustin is the bard. It is the role that fits him: he is neither the leader like Mike, nor the warrior like Lucas, nor the quiet one like Will. He is the one who talks, who explains, who bargains for a share of pizza and who, when the night goes wrong, keeps a cool head longer than the others.

Dustin lives alone with his mother Claudia and his cat, Mews. He has cleidocranial dysplasia, a rare genetic condition that affects the bones and teeth: that is why he has no front teeth at the start of the show, and why he makes that famous trumpet noise with his mouth. The show makes it neither a drama nor a gag: Dustin explains it once, calmly, and moves on.

What sets him apart is his curiosity. He is the first to understand how the thrown-off compass works, the first to want to study Dart rather than kill it, the first to put up an antenna on a hill to call his girlfriend. On a show where the adults hide everything, Dustin is the one who wants to know.

Dustin's conditionCleidocranial dysplasia delays the growth of the skull and collarbone bones and the arrival of teeth. It is real: the actor who plays Dustin has it, and he asked for it to be built into the character rather than hidden. In season 2, Dustin shows up with his first teeth and a conqueror's smile.

Dustin season by season

Dustin Henderson: Cerebro (Stranger Things)
Cerebro. A jury-rigged antenna from science camp, planted on the highest hill in Hawkins to call Suzie. It will pick up a Russian message instead.

1983Season 1: the bard and the compass

After Will's disappearance, Dustin is the one who notices that the compasses no longer point north: something very powerful is throwing off Hawkins's magnetic field, and that points toward the lab. He welcomes Eleven more easily than the others, watches her, tests her, and ends up defending her when Lucas doubts. He closes the season at the Wheelers' basement table, Will back, for a new Dungeons & Dragons campaign.

1984Season 2: Dart

In October 1984, Dustin finds in his trash a slimy creature he names D'Artagnan, Dart for short. He hides it in his room, feeds it nougat chocolate bars, and watches it grow at an alarming speed, until it eats the cat. Too late to go back: Dart is a demodog. Alone, he goes to get Steve Harrington and takes him along on the hunt. The duo goes through the junkyard, the school bus, and the tunnels under Hawkins. In the maze, Dart recognizes his friend and lets him pass: the nougat saved the party. At the Snow Ball, Nancy asks him to dance after every girl has turned him down.

1985Season 3: Cerebro and the Russians

Back from a science camp where he met Suzie, his girlfriend from Utah, Dustin puts up a radio antenna, Cerebro, at the top of a hill. He picks up a coded message in Russian. With Steve, Robin, and Erica, he follows the trail to the secret base under the Starcourt mall. On the night of the July 4 battle, he gets from Suzie the number that unlocks the code, at the cost of a duet sung live on every radio of the operation.

1986Season 4: the Hellfire Club and Eddie

At Hawkins High, Dustin joins the Hellfire Club, the Dungeons & Dragons circle presided over by Eddie Munson. When Eddie witnesses Chrissy's death and becomes suspect number one, it is Dustin who believes him, hides him, and leads the investigation. He is also the one who names the killer: Vecna, like the undead wizard from the game. His thrown-off compass, again, locates the gates. In the Upside Down, he creates a diversion with Eddie against the demobats. Eddie goes back out alone to face them to buy time, and dies in Dustin's arms. Dustin will go tell Wayne, Eddie's uncle, that his nephew died a hero.

Dustin Henderson: The Hellfire table (Stranger Things)
The Hellfire table. The high school's Dungeons & Dragons club, where Dustin meets Eddie and where the word “Vecna” is spoken for the first time.

1987Season 5: the speech

In fall 1987, Dustin has not gotten over Eddie's death. He wears his jacket, his anger, and a guilt nobody can take from him. He goes through the Hawkins quarantine and the final battle with the party, then, in the epilogue, delivers the valedictorian speech at Hawkins High. He dedicates it to Eddie Munson. The show closes on a last game of Dungeons & Dragons among friends, and Dustin leaves for college without cutting the thread with Hawkins.

What defines him

Science

Compasses, magnetic fields, antennas, demodog biology: Dustin is the only one in the party who wants to understand before acting. He is often right, and often too late.

The namer

Demogorgon, demodog, demobats. And Vecna, with Eddie. Most of the names in the universe come from him or pass through him. To name is already, a little, to master.

Loyalty

He defends Eleven against Lucas, Dart against everyone, Eddie against the whole town. Dustin picks his friends and never lets them go.

The laugh

He is the first to joke and the last to give in to panic. When Dustin no longer laughs, as in season 5, you know something has broken.

The detail nobody noticesDustin's compass is used twice, three years apart. In 1983, it points toward the lab, where the first gate opens. In 1986, it goes haywire near Lover's Lake and leads the party to the underwater gate. Same object, same character, same instinct: the show rewards those who remember.

Key moments

  1. The nougat

Dustin holds out a candy bar to a gray larva in his room, and the larva eats. Nobody has ever fed a monster with that much gentleness.

  2. The Wheelers' driveway

Steve, pinned, bat in hand, finds himself dragged along by a kid in a cap. The most loved duo on the show is born on a sidewalk.

  3. The junkyard bus

Locked in with Steve, Lucas, and Max facing the demodogs. Dustin keeps a cool head and guides the group by radio.

  4. The duet with Suzie

In the middle of a military operation, a love song in two voices on every radio. Steve, Robin, Hopper, and Joyce listen, stunned. The funniest scene on the show.

  5. The speech

In front of the whole high school, in 1987, Dustin talks about Eddie. The show leaves him the last word, and he gives it to a dead man.

Not to be confused

People often say In reality The landmark
Dustin has no teeth because of an accident It is cleidocranial dysplasia, a real genetic condition He explains it himself in season 1
Dart is the season 1 monster Dart is a demodog, juvenile stage, born in 1984 The adult Demogorgon of 1983 was destroyed by Eleven
Dustin invented the name Vecna alone He chooses it with Eddie, during the 1986 investigation Both are members of the Hellfire Club
Suzie is an imaginary character She exists, lives in Utah, and saves the 1985 operation We see her on screen, then in Hawkins in season 4

A rarer confusion: Dustin is not the leader of the party. Mike is, as dungeon master. Dustin is the one who makes the group smart, and that is a different role, often more useful.

What is Dart in Stranger Things?

Dart, for D'Artagnan, is the creature Dustin finds in his trash in 1984 and raises in secret. It is a Demogorgon larva that becomes a demodog in a few days. Dart eats Dustin's cat, but spares his life in the tunnels, in memory of the nougat.

Why is Dustin so close to Steve?

It all starts in season 2: Dustin, alone with a demodog to find, drags Steve along just after Nancy has dumped him. The two loneliest boys in Hawkins find each other, go through the junkyard and the tunnels together, and never leave each other again. Steve even gives him his hair secret.
