Who is Karen

Maple Street housewife, mother of three, married to a man who sleeps in his armchair: Karen Wheeler is, through the early seasons, the mother who asks the questions without listening to the answers. She worries about Nancy, scolds Mike, rocks Holly, and notices neither the girl hidden in the basement nor the monsters. She is the image of 80s suburbia as the show films it: kind, blind.

Season 3: the pool

In the summer of 1985, the show gives her a temptation. At the edge of the municipal pool, Billy Hargrove, the lifeguard, looks at her; she looks back, and accepts a date at a motel. When evening comes, she gets ready, then looks at Ted asleep and her children, and does not go. Billy, alone on the road, skids in front of the steel mill: that is the night the Mind Flayer takes him. Karen's refusal changes, without her knowing it, the course of the season.

Season Karen, in one scene
1 Questions Mike about Eleven without guessing
2 The bubble bath, the paperback, and the phone
3 The motel meeting, refused at the last moment
4 Welcomes the group into his living room
5 Fights the Demogorgon for Holly; wounded

Season 5: the bathroom

The last season gives her her hour. A Demogorgon comes through the ceiling of Holly's bedroom; the little girl runs to take refuge with her mother in the bathroom. Karen breaks a wine bottle, the object of four seasons of gags, and hits the creature. She loses, badly hurt. But from her hospital bed, she is the one who delivers to Nancy and Mike the decisive information: Holly's imaginary friend has a name, and it is Henry.

The wine bottleKaren's glass was the symbol of her inattention. Turning it into a weapon, the night she fights for her daughter, is one of the last season's finest ideas: the show flips its own gag.

Cara Buono

The New York actress, known before the show for roles in major crime and drama series, played Karen through all five seasons. She has often said the motel scene was the most discussed of her career, and that the bathroom scene was the one she had been waiting for since 2016.

Why the character matters

Because Karen is the point of view of the parents who do not know, and the show ends up bringing her into the story by force of will. Her season 5 replays Joyce's in 1983: a mother alone facing a creature, for a child nobody will come looking for.

Karen in Season 5, scene by scene

  1. L'institutrice

She learns that Holly talks to an invisible friend, Mr. Whatsit, and at first sees it as only a child's game.

  2. The bath

On the evening of November 3, 1987, after a fight with Ted and a few drinks too many, she runs a bath. Holly's ceiling cracks.

  3. Underwater

The lights flicker, Holly bleeds; mother and daughter hide under the bathwater while the Demogorgon smashes the door.

  4. The bottle

Cornered, Karen smashes a wine bottle and stabs the creature. She is found bleeding by Eleven and Nancy.

  5. The first name

At the hospital, she reveals to Mike and Nancy that Mr. Whatsit has a real name: Henry.

  6. The dryer

Four episodes later, she saves Robin, Vickie and Lucas from the demodogs by putting oxygen bottles in a dryer, which explodes.

The sitcom mother who becomes a fighter

For four seasons, Karen Wheeler is an archetype: the 80s housewife, perfect hair, family dinners, reading by the pool, a husband asleep in his armchair. The show has fun with it, through the temptation of season 3, when Billy, the lifeguard, asks her to meet at a motel and she backs out, looking at her family asleep.

Cara Buono, her performer, has said she accepted that Karen would stay that comic character, “a slightly clueless 80s mom.” Season 5 surprised her by giving her a “badass mom” scene: she worked the storyboards with the stunt team, and spent a day with Nell Fisher timing how long each of them could hold her breath underwater. The Duffers had wanted an attack on the Wheeler house since the first season.

What Karen knows, and since when

Karen is, with Ted, the last parent on the show to know nothing. Joyce has known since 1983, the Sinclairs and the Hendersons end up understanding, but the Wheelers go through four seasons in the dark: Mike hides Eleven in their basement, Nancy enters the Upside Down, Holly watches the Byers wall warp, and Karen notices nothing. Season 5 settles the question in the most brutal way: a Demogorgon in her bathroom.

At the hospital, Mike and Nancy regret in front of her not having talked sooner. Karen, for her part, does not ask questions; she gives Henry's first name, and that is all. The character, once informed, does not become an investigator: she becomes a mother who blows up a dryer to protect teenagers who are not hers.

Karen in three dates

  1. November 1983

She offers coffee to the agents planting bugs in her living room, without suspecting a fugitive is sleeping in the basement.

  2. July 1985

The motel, the suitcase, and giving up in front of his sleeping family.

  3. November 1987

The broken wine bottle, then the dryer: two fights in one season.

Four seasons of dinners and a fifth of fights: Karen Wheeler is the character the show underestimated the longest.

TakeawayThe Wheelers' mother, kind and blind. Season 3: the Billy temptation, refused. Season 5: the broken bottle, for Holly. Played by Cara Buono.
