Nell Fisher, a child of horror cinema

Nell Fisher was born in London, spent four years of her childhood in New Zealand, where she started acting, and began very young: at ten, she plays Kassie, the little girl who cuts up a doll in Evil Dead Rise, one of the most noticed horror films of 2023, shot in New Zealand. She follows with Bookworm (2024), an adventure comedy where she holds the lead opposite Elijah Wood, which earns her enthusiastic reviews.

It is that path, already solid for her age, that gets her noticed by the production of season 5, looking for a Holly able to play fear, imagination, and courage over several episodes.

Holly Wheeler, from extra to heroine

Holly has been there since the first episode of 1983: the little girl watching the Byers wall warp, at three. For four seasons, the character is family set dressing. Season 5 makes her a central piece: Holly has an imaginary friend, Mr. Whatsit, who turns out to be Henry Creel; she is taken by a Demogorgon in her own bathroom, and held in Vecna's mind, where she meets Max.

Nell Fisher plays a lucid child, who names her prison with the words of her favorite book, and who ends up guiding the other kidnapped children toward the exit. The change of actress, commented on at the announcement, was forgotten from the first episodes.

Why recastThe Price twins were the character's age in 1983, but Holly grows with the time jump: she is about eight in 1987, and her Season 5 scenes need an experienced actress. Production made the same choice as for other recast children on screen.

The start An imaginary friend, Mr. Whatsit, whom her parents find charming
The kidnapping A Demogorgon comes through the ceiling; Karen fights; Holly is taken
Camazotz Held in Henry's mind, she meets Max and names the place
The release She finds her own path, is recaptured, then guides the other children

What you know less about her

Nell Fisher was born in London to a New Zealand father, a former actor turned environmental lawyer, and a British diplomat mother, who was High Commissioner to New Zealand from 2018 to 2022. It was during those four years in Wellington that she started acting, in a New Zealand post-apocalyptic film, Northspur, then two episodes of an Australian series. She lives in London and studies several languages, including Russian, ancient Greek and Latin.

For Evil Dead Rise, director Lee Cronin had her handle fake blood and fake vomit before filming, to make sure she was comfortable with horror. Matt Duffer spotted her in that film's trailer, because she reminded him of Sadie Sink as a child; she was also among the group of little girls gathered by casting director Carmen Cuba.

Why the Duffers put Holly at the center

The creators explained they recast the role because the last season required of Holly a presence and a maturity the character had never had: the season explores the loss of innocence, and Shawn Levy said it focused on Holly to talk about vulnerability. Nell Fisher cited the novel A Wrinkle in Time, which Holly reads at school, as an influence on her character and on her relation to the supernatural.

The second chapter bears her name, echoing the first episode of the show; she said she felt “honored” when she discovered it at the table read, and that she had met the Price twins, who played Holly before her, to prepare the handoff.

The Price twins, and what they left

Anniston and Tinsley Price played Holly from the first season to the fourth, from the age of three. Their Holly is the one who watches the Byers wall warp in 1983, who receives a coin from Mike, who grows up in the background of the Wheeler dinners. The role was almost mute, and that is what made the change necessary: season 5 asked Holly to carry whole episodes, from fear to cunning.

Nell Fisher met the twins to prepare the handoff, and said she felt honored that the second chapter bears her character's name. The Duffers explained that the recast came down to the maturity the story required; on screen, the change was forgotten in a few scenes.
