Linda Hamilton, Sarah Connor and 80s icon
Linda Hamilton is, for two generations, Sarah Connor: the waitress hunted by a robot in Terminator (1984), then the steel-armed fighter of Terminator 2 (1991), one of the most striking female roles in action cinema. She received two Golden Globe nominations for the series Beauty and the Beast, acted in Dante's Peak, and played Sarah Connor again in 2019 in Terminator: Dark Fate.
Her arrival on the show, announced in June 2023, follows the Duffers' logic: recruit faces from 80s cinema for the adult roles, like Winona Ryder, Matthew Modine, Sean Astin or Paul Reiser before her.

Dr. Kay
Dr. Kay runs, in the fall of 1987, the military operation that put Hawkins under quarantine. She has taken the lab back, is running her own experiments on the rifts, and holds Eleven responsible for the opening of the Upside Down: her priority is to capture her. She is the new face of the state on the show, after Brenner and Owens, harder than the latter, less perverse than the former.
Linda Hamilton plays her without raising her voice, as a scientist convinced she is right, which makes her more unsettling than the soldiers she commands. In the finale, her men capture Max and Vickie, then ambush the group on its return from the Upside Down.
How she arrivedLinda Hamilton contacted the Duffers by video call; they described the “shape” of the character without telling her the story, and she said yes. Her arrival was announced at the platform's yearly event, in June 2023.

Linda Hamilton was born in Salisbury, Maryland, with a twin sister, Leslie, who died in 2020, and who served as her double in Terminator 2. Her father died when she was five. She studied two years at a Maryland college, where a professor told her she had no chance of making a living as an actor, before taking Lee Strasberg's workshops in New York.
Her first major role dates from 1984, in Children of the Corn, adapted from Stephen King, the same year as Terminator, shot with modest expectations and become number one at the American box office for two weeks. Sarah Connor and Dr. Kay: the against-type role
The choice of Linda Hamilton is not trivial. Sarah Connor, in 1984 then 1991, was a woman protecting a child against machines from the future; Dr. Kay hunts a teenage girl for the army, and injects Kali's blood into pregnant women to reproduce Brenner's experiments. The audience finds the face, and the show turns its meaning around.
The Duffers had already proceeded that way with Paul Reiser, chosen as Dr. Owens because James Cameron had made him trustworthy in Aliens. With Linda Hamilton, another face of Cameron's cinema, they do the reverse: the protector becomes the hunter. Kay has neither a first name, nor a told past, nor a shown fate after the finale; she is a function, that of the state that does not understand what it is fighting.
The Upside Down lab: his territory
Dr. Kay does not work in Hawkins but on the other side, in a military lab set up in the Upside Down, at the center of the circular wall that Dustin eventually maps. That is where she runs her experiments on a Demogorgon and other creatures, where she holds Kali in a trunk, and where Dustin finds Dr. Brenner's research notes, in a hidden room. The lab partly melts after Nancy's shot on the exotic-matter sphere.
That set says what the character is: a scientist who inherited Brenner's work without having understood its nature. Her wall was not a shield but a containment field; her sphere, the matter that held the wormhole; and the girl she was hunting, the only one able to close what she was studying.
