Who is Ted
Ted Wheeler is the father of the most ordinary family in the show: a Maple Street house, a recliner, a newspaper, a television, and a sleep that takes him in every important scene. He does not see that a girl with powers lives in his basement, nor that his older daughter hunts monsters, nor that his house serves as headquarters. When the lab men come to question him in 1983, he trusts them: “Our government has good reasons.”

The gag, for four seasons
Ted is the comedy of everyday life: each season gives him an off-the-mark line, a nap at the wrong time, a chicken to carve while the world collapses. He embodies the American suburbs that do not want to see anything, and the show does not judge him: it has fun with him, and offers him, now and then, an involuntary lucidity.

Season 5: Holly's night
The last season finally gives him something to do. When a Demogorgon comes through the ceiling of Holly's bedroom, Karen fights with a broken bottle and Ted tries to step in. He is badly hurt, like Karen, and wakes up in the hospital, in a wrecked house, with a daughter missing. For a man who spent four seasons noticing nothing, the show at least lets him be there when it counts.
Joe ChrestTed's actor, a stage and film actor, played Ted through all five seasons with the same armchair. He said he defended the character: a father who sees nothing is not a father who does not count.
Ted and Karen
The Wheeler couple is the show's counter-model: where Joyce fights alone and Hopper learns to be a father, Ted and Karen are parents present and absent at once, in a house where everything is fine as long as you do not look. Season 3 makes Karen waver; Season 5 hits them together. They survive, and Holly comes home.
Why the character matters
Because the show needs an adult who believes in nothing so that the unbelievable has weight. Ted is that wall: as long as he sleeps, the town sleeps. When he is wounded, in 1987, it is that nobody can pretend anymore.

The sleeping father, and what he stands for
Ted Wheeler is the only adult in the show who never learns anything, and that is a writing choice. He embodies Reagan's America as seen by children: a father who trusts the government, who lets agents search his house, and who falls asleep in front of the evening news. The Duffers made him a recurring gag, the recliner, the nap, dinner, but also a counterpoint to Hopper and Joyce, the two adults who, for their part, never sleep.
Joe Chrest, who plays him, is there in all five seasons without ever being billed as a lead. That constancy ended up making Ted a character people love for what he does not do, until the last season finally gives him a gesture.
The night of November 3, 1987, in detail
That night, the Byers are living with the Wheelers since the quarantine, which exasperates Ted. He argues with Karen about Holly, who talks to an invisible friend; Karen, who has drunk too much, goes up to run a bath; Ted goes out to play golf in the yard. He does not see Holly's ceiling crack.
When the lights flicker, he comes in, calls his wife and his daughter, and finds himself facing the Demogorgon. He hits it with his golf club; the creature throws him through a wall, into Mike's closet. He survives, wounded. For a character who had slept through four seasons, it is a brutal waking, and the only time Ted Wheeler fights for his family.
Everything Ted missed, in one list
To measure the gag, you only have to list what happened under Ted Wheeler's roof without him noticing. A fugitive from the lab lived a week in his basement in 1983, eating his Eggos. Agents planted mics in his living room, with his blessing. His older daughter bought a rifle, had a federal lab shut down and investigated murders. His son hid a letter from Eleven for months. His youngest talked to a child killer under the name Mr. Whatsit.
The show has never given Ted a scene where he learns all of that. Even after the 1987 Demogorgon, he stays outside the explanations, and the 1989 epilogue does not show him. Ted is the only recurring character in the show to go through ten years of story without ever receiving the instructions.
