Who is Jim Hopper?
When Joyce Byers bursts into the station to report her son missing, Hopper surfaces from a hangover, a cigarette in his hand, and tells her kids always come back. He is a small-town cop who has stopped believing. A Vietnam veteran, a former homicide detective in New York, he came back to Hawkins after the death of his daughter Sara, taken by cancer, and the divorce that followed. He drinks, he takes pills, he sleeps with whoever. He is waiting for it to pass.
Will's disappearance wakes him up. In a few days, he discovers that the body found in the quarry is a fake, that the national laboratory is lying, and that another world exists under this one. He goes in, with Joyce, to bring the child back. It is the first time since Sara that he saves someone.
The rest of the show makes him a father. Not a good one, not right away: a father who locks up, who shouts, who lies to protect. But a father who stays, who comes back from Russia, and who finally learns to let go of his daughter's hand.
SaraHopper's daughter died as a child, of cancer, in New York. The show only shows her in fragments: a blue scrunchie Hopper keeps in his pocket, a hospital room, a memory of woods. Hopper season by season
1983Season 1: the investigation
Hopper leads the search for Will, uncovers the fake-body fraud at the morgue, forces his way into the lab, and understands what is hidden there. He strikes a deal with the scientists to enter the Upside Down with Joyce and bring the child back, whom they find unconscious in the flipped version of the library. At the end of the season, he leaves waffles in a box deep in the woods: he knows Eleven is alive somewhere.
1984Season 2: the cabin
He has found Eleven and has been hiding her for a year in his grandfather's cabin, deep in the woods, with three rules and a locked door. He raises her as best he can: meals, arguments, a television, a promise to let her out one day. She runs, he finds her. On the night of the battle, she closes the gate in front of him. He gets a birth certificate from Sam Owens: Jane Hopper. He takes her to the Snow Ball and waits in the car, listening to the radio.
1985Season 3: Starcourt
Summer 1985, Hopper cannot stand Mike kissing his daughter in his cabin. He threatens the boy, lies to Eleven, and writes a letter to talk to her about growing up, which he will never read to her. With Joyce, he investigates magnets that fall, runs into a Russian scientist, Alexei, and discovers with Murray Bauman a Soviet base under the Starcourt mall, where a machine is trying to reopen the gate. On July 4, to let Joyce destroy the machine, he stays on the catwalk, within range of the explosion, and vanishes. Eleven reads his letter. Hawkins buries him.
1986Season 4: Kamchatka
He is not dead. Thrown by the explosion, captured by the Russians, he is held in a prisoner camp in Kamchatka, Siberia. He bribes a guard, Dmitri Antonov, to get a message to Joyce, tries to escape, is recaptured. In an arena, the guards release a Demogorgon on the inmates; Hopper survives, Joyce and Murray get him out, and the three discover the Russians are keeping other creatures. On the night of the battle of Hawkins, they burn them with a flamethrower. Hopper comes home, finds Eleven in the ruined cabin, and tells her what he never managed to say.
1987Season 5: the proposal
Under the military quarantine, Hopper takes refuge in the Upside Down after a Demogorgon attack on a convoy, then infiltrates the army base with Joyce to free the kidnapped children. He goes through the final battle, and the epilogue, in May 1989, shows him asking Joyce to marry him, with the idea of going to live in Montauk, in the state of New York. Eleven is not there to see it. He chooses, like Mike, to believe she is alive.
What defines him
He locks Eleven away to protect her, then learns to let her go. His whole arc sits in that motion: from the closed door to the hand released.
Hopper investigates better than all of Hawkins: the fake body, the lab, the magnets, the Russian base. He believes no one, and that is why he finds things.
He hits, he shouts, he threatens Mike. The show does not hide his violence: it shows what it costs, and what he does to contain it.
The childhood friend who became everything else. He follows her into the Upside Down in 1983, she looks for him all the way to Siberia in 1986.
