Eight episodes, three volumes
The Duffer Brothers announced the number of episodes at the same time as the titles, in November 2024, a year before release: eight chapters, numbered as in the previous seasons. Volume 1 contains four, volume 2 three, and the finale came out alone, like a movie.
Season 1 also had eight, Seasons 2 and 4 nine, Season 3 eight. With Season 5, the show totals 42 episodes.

Episodes getting longer and longer
The first volume comes in at four and a half hours. The second is longer with only three episodes, because chapter 6 stretches, and the finale, alone, has the runtime of a feature. In all, the season passes ten hours: shorter than Season 4 and its thirteen hours, but longer than each of the first three.
It is the finale that justified the theatrical screening: two hours, a credit sequence, and an ending you watch in one sitting.
One fewer episode, not less storyThe Duffers explained that Season 4 could have been shorter and that Season 5, written as one movie in eight parts, did not need a ninth chapter. So there is no episode 9.

The split into volumes
Each volume stops on a turn: the fourth episode reveals a new ability in a character, the seventh opens the way to the finale. The five weeks between the volumes were designed so the audience would discuss each block, as between two movies of a trilogy.

Why the episodes are so long
As early as June 2024, in the middle of filming, Maya Hawke was warning on a podcast that the season would be “basically eight movies,” with “very long” episodes. It is the extension of a movement started in season 4, whose chapters already ran from 63 to 150 minutes. For the last season, the creators owned the format: each chapter is built like a feature, with its own rise, its own climax.
That choice has a cost. According to the trade press, each episode cost between 50 and 60 million dollars, a total budget estimated between 400 and 480 million for the season, one of the most expensive television productions ever made. The shoot produced 630 hours of rushes for a little more than ten hours on screen.
The consequence for you as a viewer is simple: the shortest season in number of episodes is the longest in runtime. You should not compare it to the nine episodes of Season 2, none of which went over an hour, but to a cycle of films.

Volume 1 is the longest in total, at more than four hours. The finale alone, at 128 minutes, runs longer than the first two episodes combined. If you only have one evening, the natural split is: volume 1 one night, volume 2 another, and the finale on its own, like a movie screening.
Comparison with the other seasons
Season 1 sat in eight episodes of about 45 to 55 minutes, a little under seven hours. Season 2, with nine episodes, approached eight hours. Season 3 went back to eight episodes for a total close to seven and a half hours. Season 4 blew the format open: nine episodes, including a two-and-a-half-hour finale, for nearly thirteen hours.
Season 5 therefore sits in second place in total runtime, behind Season 4, but with one fewer episode. Over the whole show, you count 42 episodes and about 45 hours of viewing. The longest chapter in the whole show remains “The Piggyback,” the Season 4 finale; the longest of Season 5 is “The Rightside Up,” which was also shown in theaters.
