The answer
No feature film is in development. The Duffers have said it every time they were asked: the group's story ends with the fifth season, and a movie that would extend it would make no sense. They have signed for other projects, outside this universe, and the only spin-off in live action that has been mentioned would be a series, not a movie.

The finale, a movie that does not say its name
What fed the rumor is the last episode: more than two hours, a feature-film structure, and a screening in more than 600 theaters in North America on the night of its release, December 31, 2025. The creators presented it as “the movie” of the show. For many viewers, it is indeed a movie they saw that night, with a ticket and a dark theater.

Why no film
Three reasons. The form: the show was always thought in seasons of eight or nine chapters, and its creators said a film would not leave room for the whole party. The calendar: the actors are over twenty and have careers elsewhere. And the substance: the ending was written as an ending, with an epilogue that closes each fate; reopening it would betray it.

What to keep
No film, no sequel, and a finale that is worth a feature. If a theatrical project ever existed, it would be in another corner of the universe, without the 1983 party. For now, nothing of the kind is announced.

The Duffers and film, after the show
The Duffer Brothers come from film: their first feature, Hidden, a locked-room story in a post-apocalyptic shelter, came out quietly in 2015, a few months before the Season 1 shoot. They announced, after the end of the show, a deal with a major film studio, which feeds speculation about a movie. But they have also repeated that Hawkins was finished for them, and that the live-action spin-off would be entrusted to others.
What exists, in place of a movie, is a last chapter designed as a movie: 128 minutes, two climaxes, an epilogue, a mix worked for the theater, and 620 North American cinemas on the night of December 31, 2025. Ross Duffer said that theatrical release had been in preparation for a year. For the Duffers, it was the way to make a Hawkins movie without announcing one.
What a movie would be, and why it is not coming
A film would necessarily pick up one of two threads: the adult party, after 1989, or a new episode of the Upside Down. The first would contradict the epilogue, built as a door that closes; the second would contradict the bomb, which destroyed the Upside Down and closed every door. The Duffers wanted an ending that relaunches nothing, and a film would reopen it.
What remains possible is a movie in the universe without the group: the announced spin-off series takes place in another decade and outside Hawkins, and nothing prevents one of those projects from one day taking the form of a feature. But to date, no movie has been announced, and the only movies in the universe are the ones the group watches on screen, from Back to the Future to The NeverEnding Story.
