What works
The show succeeds at three things few shows succeed at together. Characters you love right away, children and adults, with a cast that grew nine years in front of the camera without ever weakening. What works less
The show has its lengths, especially in Season 4 and its hour-and-a-half episodes. It sometimes repeats its formula: a monster, a gate, a closing, until Season 4 breaks it. Its secondary adult characters are sometimes sacrificed to the plot. And its ending makes a choice about its heroine that not everyone will accept.
