Who is Bob Newby?
One year after Will's disappearance, Joyce Byers has a man in her life, and nobody saw it coming. Bob Newby is an old high-school classmate, manager of the RadioShack, Hawkins's electronics store. He wears crew-neck sweaters, likes easy jokes and Bing Crosby movies, and makes a family laugh that had not laughed in a long time. Jonathan finds him a little square. Will listens to him.
Bob is the first adult on the show who hides nothing and wants nothing. He suggests to Joyce that they leave Hawkins for a quiet life in Maine. He sets up a video camera for Halloween. He gives Will advice for facing his nightmares, without knowing the monster is real, and that advice turns against the child. Bob will blame himself; he will make it right.
What makes him a character apart is that he is ordinary. He has no power, no rifle, no past. He has a brain, a heart, and a night at the lab where both will serve.

October 1984The new partner
Bob appears in the Byers' life with a video camera and a plan: film Halloween. He suggests to Joyce that they move to Maine, far from everything. When Will has his “episodes”, Bob gives him the advice he used as a child against his own nightmares: face the monster and tell it to leave. Will does it. The Mind Flayer enters him.
November 1984The map
Will, possessed, covers the house with drawings that form a huge network of lines. Joyce and Hopper understand nothing. Bob, for his part, sees a map: the lines are tunnels, and the map is Hawkins. He spots the place where Hopper has fallen in the galleries, and saves him. It is the first time Bob the Brain is of any use in this story.
November 1984The lab
At the lab, Will is treated, but the creature that inhabits him sends the demodogs against the building. The power goes out, the doors lock. Bob is the only one who knows how to program the central computer: he goes down alone into the basement, resets the system, reopens the doors, and guides Joyce, Hopper, Mike, and Will toward the exit by radio. He makes it. In the lobby, a few meters from the door, a demodog knocks him down. Joyce, held back by Hopper, watches him die.
AfterWhat remains
Season 3 brings him back in a memory of Joyce's, in 1985, when she hesitates to leave Hawkins. Season 5 again, in 1987. Bob no longer appears, but every time Joyce has to choose, it is him she thinks of. Hopper, for his part, understood that night what he owed this man. And the middle-school AV club, the one Bob had founded as a teenager, still lends its walkie-talkies to the group: every radio call from Mike, Dustin, or Lucas goes, without their knowing it, through the legacy of Bob the Brain.

Bob has no enemy, and that is what strikes you when you draw up this list. No character on the show wishes him harm, none really despises him, not even Jonathan. He dies from a monster that does not know him, for people he has known for a few weeks. Fans found him a nickname that sums it all up: the true hero of season 2.
