The couples on screen
| Couple | Since | At the end of the show |
|---|---|---|
| Mike and Eleven | 1983 | Eleven gone; Mike believes she is alive |
| Lucas and Max | 1984 | Graduated together in 1989 |
| Nancy and Jonathan | 1984 | Parted on good terms in 1987 |
| Joyce and Hopper | 1987, after ten years of waiting | Marriage proposal, Montauk plan |
| Robin and Vickie | 1987 | A couple; Vickie absent from the epilogue |
| Dustin and Suzie | 1985 | Remotely, always |
| Steve and Nancy | 1983 to 1984 | Steve ends up with someone else, Kristen |
The most awaited couple was Joyce and Hopper: ten years of looks, a kiss interrupted in 1985, a Russian prison in 1986, and a marriage proposal in the 1989 epilogue. The most discussed one, Nancy, Jonathan and Steve, was settled with no winner: Nancy ends up free.

Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton
Nancy and Jonathan on screen, together in life since filming season 1. The couple, discreet, has never commented on their relationship beyond a few joint appearances on red carpets, and went through the show's nine years without making it a topic. It is the only real couple born on the show.
The others, in real life
Millie Bobby Brown married Jake Bongiovi, Jon Bon Jovi's son, in May 2024, between two blocks of filming on the last season. Joe Keery has been with the actress Maika Monroe for years. The other actors in the party keep their private lives off social media, and the rumors that circulated about Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp or Sadie Sink belong to the tabloids, not to the facts.
| Actor | Character | In real life |
|---|---|---|
| Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton | Nancy and Jonathan | A couple since 2016 |
| Millie Bobby Brown | Eleven | Married to Jake Bongiovi in 2024 |
| Joe Keery | Steve | Together with Maika Monroe |
| Winona Ryder | Joyce | A longtime couple, outside the show |
| David Harbour | Hopper | Private life off social media |
What the show did not doNo couple of kids from the show became a real couple, unlike what social media repeated for years. The actors of the party describe themselves as siblings.
The triangle, and its resolution
Nancy, Steve, Jonathan: the 2016 question lasted until 2025. Season 4 had rekindled the idea of Nancy going back to Steve; season 5 ends it: Jonathan saves Steve at the heart of the battle, Nancy and Jonathan separate on good terms, and Steve, in the epilogue, has a new girlfriend. Nobody "wins" Nancy, and that is the point.
Why the couples matter in the show
Because they grow up with the actors: from the first middle-school kisses in 1983 to the 1989 proposals, the show filmed nine years of real life and six years of fictional life. The couples are its way of saying that time passes, monsters or not.

Where each couple stands at the end of the show
| Couple | Status in the spring of 1989 |
|---|---|
| Mike and Eleven | Separated by Eleven's choice; a last "I love you," and Mike's theory to keep hoping |
| Lucas and Max | Together: Lucas is the anchor that brought her back, and they finally go to the movies |
| Joyce and Hopper | Engaged: Hopper proposes at Enzo's, and suggests Montauk |
| Nancy and Jonathan | Separated by mutual agreement, in the room that melts, without a fight |
| Robin and Vickie | Together since the start of season 5, in secret first, then in the open |
| Dustin and Suzie | Still at a distance, always by radio |
| Steve | Single: the show gives him neither Nancy nor anyone, but a group of friends who promise to see each other again |
Nancy and Jonathan's breakup, explained
It is the scene the Duffers have said they spent the second-most time on in the whole last season. In the Upside Down lab, a room melts around them, and they think they are lost. Jonathan admits he wanted to propose, then asks her, on the contrary, not to marry him. They recognize they want different futures, and they part. The room stops melting.
Matt Duffer spoke of a "traumatic bond": they love each other, but need to let each other go in order to grow. The end of their story had been decided for a long time. Steve, who had spent the season watching the couple, does not benefit: the show refuses the triangle and leaves Nancy alone, which many viewers found fairer than any choice.
What we know, and what we do not know, about the real couples
On real couples, you have to stick to what the people involved have made public. Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton, Nancy and Jonathan on screen, have been together since the filming of the first season, and their relationship has been known since 2017; they almost never comment on it. Millie Bobby Brown got married in 2024; her husband has nothing to do with the show. Noah Schnapp came out in January 2023, which gave Will's arc a particular resonance.
For the rest, the rumors of couples between actors on the show, regularly revived by social media, have never been confirmed by the people concerned, and we do not pick them up. The show itself has an answer to that curiosity: the party's friendship, in the epilogue, counts more than any couple.
The couples that did not happen
The show also has its aborted stories, and they count. Steve and Nancy, the couple of 1983, fall apart in 1984 in a parking lot, on a “this is bullshit” that Nancy throws, drunk, at Halloween party. Steve and Robin, whom everyone expected in 1985, do not happen: Robin admits to him in the movie-theater bathroom that she likes girls, and their friendship becomes the best duo on the show. Dustin and Max, suggested for a time at the Snow Ball, stops at a dance.
And Will, whose feelings for Mike are confirmed in season 5, does not form a couple. The Duffers have said they wanted him accepted, not paired off. In a show that loves slow dances, the refusal of the couple is sometimes the fairest conclusion.
