The costumes the show itself wore
The show has its own Halloweens. In 1984, the group dresses as Ghostbusters, beige jumpsuits and homemade proton packs, with an argument over who plays Venkman; Max arrives as Michael Myers, and Will sees the shadow in the street. It is episode 2 of Season 2, and the most copied group costume of the show since. In 1985, Eleven and Max go shopping instead of dressing up; in 1986, Vecna does not need a costume.
Reproducing the Ghostbusters of 1984 is doing what the party did: work coveralls dyed beige, printed patches, proton packs of cardboard and a garden hose. The imperfection is part of the costume.

Fans also spot the anachronisms, a modern walkie-talkie, 2020 sneakers, a recent embroidered-logo cap. The show is precise about dates; costumes gain by being so.
The other mistake is mixing the periods: a 1984 Max, in skate shoes and a cap, does not wear the 1986 Walkman; a 1987 Eleven no longer has a shaved head. Picking a season, and sticking to it, is the rule that makes the best groups.
