Scoops Ahoy is the ice cream parlor of the Starcourt mall, in Hawkins, where Steve Harrington, freshly graduated and with no future, serves ice cream in a sailor uniform in the summer of 1985, alongside a colleague who cordially despises him: Robin Buckley. That is where one of the best plots of the show begins.

A nautical ice-cream stand in a 1985 mall
Starcourt has just opened and is closing downtown shops. Scoops Ahoy is its ice cream parlor: ocean-liner decor, a “You rule / You suck” board on which Robin tallies Steve's failures at hitting on customers, and a service door that leads to the mall's technical corridors. Steve, rejected by college, took the job by default; Robin, a high school classmate he did not notice, works there for the summer.
The ice-cream shop is also Dustin's headquarters, back from camp: that is where he brings the Russian message picked up on his radio, and where Robin, in a few hours, cracks the code.

The Russian code and the service door
The intercepted message, in Russian, talks about “the week is long,” “the silverware,” and “Imperial Panda.” Robin, who learns languages for fun, understands that they are delivery instructions inside the mall. The proof comes from the ice-cream shop's chimes, which you hear on the recording: the message was sent from Starcourt.
Steve, Robin and Dustin spot armed delivery men, a hidden door, and a service elevator too small for an adult: it is Erica, ten, who agrees to go through the ducts, for free ice cream for life. The quartet goes down into a Soviet base buried under the mall.
The “You rule / You suck” boardRobin writes on it, in chalk, the customers Steve tries to approach and the result. Score at the start of the season: zero successes. The object became one of the most reproduced props in the show.
What Scoops Ahoy did to Steve and Robin
Abducted by the Russians, drugged with truth serum, Steve and Robin find themselves in the movie-theater restroom, on the tiles, finally telling each other the truth: he that he likes her, she that she likes girls. The scene changes Steve's character for good and makes Robin, arrived in season 3, one of the pillars of the show.
The ice-cream shop, for its part, does not survive the summer: Starcourt is destroyed in the final battle. Steve and Robin find a job together again in Season 4, at the Family Video store, in green polos, with the same kind of board behind the counter.

Why Scoops Ahoy became cult
The uniform did the rest: Steve's sailor costume is one of the most worn costumes since 2019, and pop-up ice-cream stands in the parlor's colors opened in several cities at the Season 3 release. For fans, Scoops Ahoy is the symbol of a summer when the show sided with comedy without losing any of its darkness.
There is also a simpler reason: the service-door scene, where Steve and Robin, in uniform, try to talk a ten-year-old Erica into crawling through a duct, is one of the funniest moments in the whole show. It made the ice-cream parlor a setting in its own right, on the same level as the lab or the Byers house.

The message, picked up by Dustin on Cerebro, is decoded by Robin in one night, with a notebook and a Russian manual. The conclusion is terrifying in its simplicity: the Russians are in the mall, they are receiving a delivery, and Scoops Ahoy's service door opens onto their corridor.
The uniforms, and the real ice
The Scoops Ahoy sailor outfits, navy blue and white, with the little hat and the red scarf, were designed by the season's costume designer to look like those of 80s ice-cream chains. They became one of the most worn costumes at conventions, and Steve openly hates them on screen, which is part of the gag.
In 2019, an American ice-cream chain opened a real pop-up Scoops Ahoy in California, with flavors named after the show, and sold its ice cream in the colors of Hawkins all summer. The fictional parlor therefore existed for a few weeks, and fans could order their “USS Butterscotch” served by sellers in sailor uniforms.
After the fire: Family Video
Scoops Ahoy burns with the mall the night of July 4, 1985. Three months later, Steve and Robin work in a video store, Family Video, where season 4 finds them: Steve behind the counter, Robin in the aisles, and the same arguments. The video store takes the role the ice-cream shop held, the place where the group meets and where Robin stammers in front of Vickie.
In 1987, under the quarantine, it is a radio station, WSQK, that replaces the video store. The Duffers have given Steve and Robin, each season, an 80s shop as headquarters: the ice-cream parlor, the video store, the radio. Scoops Ahoy has remained the most loved, because that is where Robin told the truth on the restroom tiles.
