Where Byler comes from
The name appears after season 2, when the Snow Ball leaves Will alone facing a dance, and Mike, who spent a season watching over him, becomes Eleven's boyfriend again. Fans reread season 1 in that light: Mike, the one who refuses to give up on Will, and Will, the one for whom Mike matters more than anything. The show let it happen, without ever confirming or denying.

Seasons 3 and 4: the clues
In 1985, in the basement argument, Mike throws at Will: “It's not my fault you don't like girls.” The line, ambiguous, fed three years of debate. In 1986, in the van crossing the desert, Will explains to Mike what Eleven feels for him while talking, in reality, about himself, and cries as he turns toward the window. Noah Schnapp confirmed after the season: Will is gay, and he loves Mike.
At that stage, the show had said half: Will's feelings. Not what Mike would do with them.

Season 5: the coming out
The last season decides. Will, become the key character of the battle, tells his family and friends who he is. Mike supports him without reserve, as he always has; but Mike stays with Eleven, and the show does not make Byler a couple. It does something fairer: it gives Will an identity, not a partner, and the epilogue shows him graduated, ready to leave town for a place where he can love freely.

The van scene, and what the Duffers said about it
The most discussed scene of Season 4 happens in the Surfer Boy Pizza van, on the road to Nevada. Will explains to Mike what Eleven feels for him, looking at her painting: she is afraid of losing him, she feels different, she loves him anyway. Jonathan, at the wheel, understands that Will is talking about himself. The Duffer Brothers have since confirmed that this monologue had been written, originally, as the moment of Will's confession, with a subtext about his own feelings for Mike.
They finally pushed the coming out to Season 5, so it would serve as the high point of a path toward acceptance. Noah Schnapp, who came out himself in January 2023, said he studied the episode 7 scene's text for almost a month, and described it as “liberating.”
What the ending says, exactly
The last chapter does not make Will and Mike a couple, and it does not split them up either. During the climb of the tower, Mike apologizes for having ignored what Will was going through, and their friendship is reaffirmed. In the epilogue, Mike predicts that Will will leave Hawkins and feel, for the first time, in the right place. He himself goes on loving Eleven, from whom he receives a last “I love you” in their final shared moment.
The Duffers said they wanted Will to be accepted, not paired off. The question “Is Byler canon?” therefore has two answers: Will's feelings, yes, since Season 4; the couple, no. The name itself stays: it has become one of the most used labels in the history of the show on social media, and the last chapter gave it a conclusion rather than a denial.
