Episode 5: Kali's illusion
After killing the Demogorgons, Will flees the base with Joyce and Mike, stunned. Dr. Kay discovers that the Kali she thought she held is only an illusion, born of the real one's powers, which fades because Kali is already far away, in a military car with Eleven and Hopper. Will, for his part, blames himself: all the children were taken because he did not act soon enough.

Two plans to find Vecna
Joyce finds Lucas, Robin, and Murray and proposes using Will's link to the hive to locate Vecna. Two plans in parallel: Erica wants to recruit Mr. Clarke, the science teacher, to build a tracker; Lucas, who remembers Billy's sauna, wants to briefly wake a dead Demogorgon with the radio tower's electricity, so Will can plug into it. During the preparations, Will confides in Robin, who tells him about her own coming out to Steve.

In Henry's mind
In his human form, Henry welcomes the kidnapped children into his home, pretending to have saved them from the monsters: together, he says, they will tame a force able to drive out the darkness. Holly finds Max in secret and warns her; Derek, who followed them, offers a diversion and leads the children into the woods. Max and Holly search Holly's memories to find Henry's first appearance, go back to the attack on the Wheeler house, and almost reach an exit when Henry confronts them in his true form. In the woods, he corners Derek and threatens his family to make sure of his docility.
In Hawkins, the revived Demogorgon lets Will enter Vecna's mind. He sees him strangling Max, wounds him, speaks for a moment through him to tell Max to run, and Max and Holly escape. Vecna ejects him violently; Will falls unconscious.
The secret of Kali's blood
In the Upside Down, Hopper, Eleven, and Kali arrive at the church, where Steve, Dustin, Nancy, and Jonathan have disappeared. Kali tells: after Chicago, the army found her, killed her friends, and delivered her to Dr. Kay, who ran experiments on her, going so far as to inject her blood into pregnant women to reproduce what had given Henry and Eleven their powers.
Steve and DustinIn the Upside Down lab, Steve talks lightly about Eddie's sacrifice; Dustin hits him, and Steve leaves. The fight, which had been brewing since the first episode, will be settled in the next one.
The sphere
At the Upside Down lab, Dustin understands that the mysterious wall protects the zone where Vecna is holding the children, and that destroying his energy source could save them. The group splits up. Nancy and Jonathan walk through melted rooms, with soldiers fused to the walls, and climb onto the roof: an immense energy sphere floats there. In a hidden room, Dustin finds Dr. Brenner's notes and understands his mistake: the wall is not a shield, and destroying it would be fatal. He runs to warn Nancy; she shoots the sphere before he arrives.

Behind the scenes: Darabont, dark version
The script of “Shock Jock” is by Curtis Gwinn, his third episode written for the show. Directing, Frank Darabont, already at the helm of chapter 3. Ross Duffer warned that the director was “flexing some very different muscles” there: where “The Turnbow Trap” played adventure comedy, this one is “a lot darker and a lot scarier.” The episode picks up a few moments after the end of “Sorcerer.”
The Duffers set a rule for the whole second volume: before the final battle, each character must have settled their conflicts, with themselves or with the others. Only two things are reserved for the last chapter, Eleven's doubt about the possibility of a happy ending, and Henry's real origin. Everything else has to resolve here and in the next two episodes.
Linnea Berthelsen, who plays Kali, asked the Duffers that her head be shaved on camera, and it was the show's co-head of hair who did it. According to her, Kali was "someone who wants to be in control" in season 2, and has "lost everything" between her two appearances. Millie Bobby Brown believes her return is there first of all to reveal what Dr. Kay is building in the Upside Down.
The conflicts that explode in the lab
In the Upside Down lab, the group splits up to look for the wall's energy source. Steve and Dustin finally clash: Steve talks lightly about Eddie's sacrifice, Dustin cannot stand it, and the exchange ends in a scuffle before Steve walks off. That conflict had been brewing since the first episode, when Steve blamed Dustin for missing the crawl.
Nancy and Jonathan, for their part, discover rooms that melt into one another, with soldiers fused into the walls, then climb onto the roof where a gigantic energy sphere floats. Dustin, in a hidden room, comes upon Dr. Brenner's research notes and understands that the wall is not a protective shield: destroying it would be fatal. He runs to warn Nancy, too late. She fires.
On Will's side, the episode marks a turn that Noah Schnapp describes as a new inner strength: he pushes Joyce to stop overprotecting him, and it is she who proposes plugging him back into the hive. Winona Ryder has said she was “caught off guard” by her partner's acting in those scenes.
Lucas's idea: Billy's sauna
The plan to revive the Demogorgon comes from a precise memory. Lucas remembers what happened in Season 3, when Billy, possessed, had been locked in the pool sauna: heat and electricity had a direct effect on the creature controlling him. He deduces that a discharge from the radio tower can briefly revive a Demogorgon, enough for Will to reconnect to the hive.
In parallel, Erica proposes recruiting Mr. Clarke, the science teacher, to build a tracker. Both plans are run at once, and both will serve: the revived Demogorgon lets Will enter Vecna's mind, and Mr. Clarke will play a decisive role in episode 7.
