The fourth episode, 83 minutes, closes the first volume on the most discussed scene of the season: Will Byers, the 1983 victim, the 1984 possessed, freezes three Demogorgons in mid-flight and kills them. “Sorcerer,” the wizard, is him. But before that, Henry has taken eight children. Here is the recap.

Episode 4: the barn, and Steve's car
In the barn, Joyce, Will, Robin and Erica try to convince Derek, terrified, that they are protecting him; he does not believe them and tries to flee. Will senses the Demogorgon coming. Joyce holds it off long enough for Dustin, Steve, Nancy and Jonathan to ram it with Steve's car. The creature flees into the Upside Down; Steve's group follows it, and the car crashes into the mysterious wall. Will, for his part, has a vision: Holly and three other children held by Henry, and eight empty places.

The army rounds up the children
On Dr. Kay's orders, the army gathers the town's children at its base, to lure Eleven. Will's group sends Derek to the base to identify those who have seen Henry, so they can be evacuated through secret tunnels and entrusted to Murray. In the tunnels, Mike suggests to Will that he may have more power over the hive than he thinks. Robin, who has understood what Will feels for Mike, tells him that the girl she loved was interested in Steve, and that she learned to accept herself without waiting for anyone's validation.

Kali in the trunk
In the Upside Down, Eleven and Hopper make contact again with Steve's group, stuck against the wall, and order them not to move. They infiltrate the military lab, disable Akers, and knock out Dr. Kay. The secure vault does not hide Vecna, but Kali, Eight, the lab sister Eleven had left in Chicago in 1984, held by the army.
Max, in the caveMax explains to Holly that they are in a world made of Henry's memories. Since her brief death, she has been exploring those memories to escape; she almost came back when she heard Lucas play her song at the hospital, but Henry found her. The cave is a memory too terrifying for him to enter. She tells Holly to go back to the house and play along.
Henry takes the children
At the base, the evacuation is discovered by Sullivan; Joyce, Will, Mike, Derek and two children are arrested. Will collapses: something is coming. Creatures and Henry, in his Vecna form, surge from the Upside Down, massacre the guards and burn Sullivan. Henry explains to Will that he targets children because they are "perfect vessels," that he can reshape in his image, and that Will's 1983 kidnapping taught him what was possible. He goes back into the Upside Down with the eight children.
The scene: Will against the Demogorgons
Three Demogorgons are about to kill Mike, Lucas and Robin. Will remembers Robin's words, then his happiest memories, with Joyce, Jonathan and Mike. Something is released: he freezes the three creatures in mid-flight and kills them, by the sole force of his mind. Volume 1 ends there, and the audience waited five weeks.

Behind the scenes: “the craziest shoot of our lives”
"Sorcerer" is written by Paul Dichter, a producer on the show, and it is his fifth script. Ross Duffer announced it as a "massive" episode, as big as a finale, and as "the most insane shoot of our lives, logistically." It closes the first volume, released November 26, 2025, on a double movement: the lowest point, the children taken by Henry, and the highest point, Will discovering what he can do.
The Duffers explained that Will's powers had been planned for a long time: “it was something we always wanted to do.” They also made a point of stating the rule of the game. Will does not have powers of his own like Eleven: he draws on the hive because Vecna is closer than ever. He can manipulate everything that belongs to the hive, so the Demogorgons, but he could not open a gate.
Why now? According to Matt Duffer, the mythology only explains part of the answer. The other part is Will himself: more fearful than the others for four seasons, never a leader, never at peace with what he is. His conversation with Robin in the tunnels, a few minutes before the scene, is presented by the creators as the real trigger. Noah Schnapp spoke of a reveal "to make your head spin" at the script read.
The wall, Steve's car, and the trunk
The episode moves three investigations at once. In the real world, Steve's car runs over the Demogorgon that was threatening the barn, then follows it into the Upside Down before crashing into the mysterious wall. Dustin understands that this wall draws a complete circle, and that its center is Hawkins Lab.
On their side, Eleven and Hopper spot the military lab of the Upside Down, make radio contact with Steve's group, and break in. They put Akers out of action, knock out Dr. Kay, and open the vault. It is not Vecna who is there but Kali, Eleven's numbered sister, absent since season 2.
In Henry's mind at last, Max explains to Holly where they are: a world built with the monster's memories. Max has been exploring it since her brief death, almost went back when Lucas played her song at the hospital, then discovered the cave where Henry cannot follow her, tied according to her to a memory he refuses to face.
