Stranger Things theories: the big fan theories about the ending, and what really happened

For three and a half years, between the 1986 rift and the first volume, fans wrote the ending in the Duffers' place. Some theories hit the mark, others were more beautiful than the truth. Here are the eight most shared, and what the last episode did with them.

The theories that were right
The strongest theory was Will's: since season 2 and his possession, fans argued that he stayed tied to the hive and that he would end up using it. True, and beyond: Will commands the creatures from episode 4 and freezes Henry in the finale. The second, born from the last shot of season 4, wanted Max not only in a coma but somewhere, a prisoner. True: her consciousness was in Camazotz.
Third theory confirmed: Brenner was responsible for everything. His notebooks reveal that by forcing Eleven to contact Henry in 1979, he created the Upside Down as we know it.

Eleven: the theory that has no verdict
"Eleven will die to close the Upside Down" was the most widespread theory, and the most feared. The show did something more twisting: Eleven stays on the other side while everything collapses, but nothing shows her death, and the epilogue leaves Mike convinced she is alive. The partisans of sacrifice and those of survival therefore each have their ending, and that is intended.
The Eleven-Vecna theoryOne reading wanted Eleven to become the new Vecna, or to have been Vecna from the start, through a loop. False: Henry is Henry, and Eleven was never anything but his first opponent.
The theories disproved
The death of Steve, predicted since 2017 by those who found his redemption “too perfect,” did not happen: he ends up a baseball coach. Hopper's sacrifice, a theory born of his status as a substitute father, neither: he asks Joyce to marry him. The time loop, which wanted Season 5 to send the group back to 1983 to stop Will's disappearance, never existed, even if the first episode opens in 1983.
Finally, Eddie does not come back, neither as Kas the vampire, nor otherwise: Joseph Quinn is not in the credits, and Dustin wears his jacket in his place.
What nobody saw coming
Three things: that Holly Wheeler, a mute character for four seasons, would become the heart of the fifth; that Kali would come back, to die; and that it would be Joyce, with the axe, who would give the last blow to Henry. None of these three ideas figured in the most shared theories.
Why so many theories
The show has always planted seeds: one shot too many on Holly in 1983, a song, a clock. The split of Season 5 into three volumes extended the game to the end, with five weeks between episodes 4 and 5 where every detail of the prologue was dissected. Theories are part of the show as much as its monsters.

The theory after the ending: “Conformity Gate”
The strangest theory was born after the last episode. Under the name “Conformity Gate,” fans argued that a secret ninth chapter would come out on January 7, 2026, by rereading every detail of the finale as a clue: Eleven's open fate, Mike's theory about Kali, the door Mike closes, down to the dates shown on screen.
On January 7, nothing came out. The rush of the curious was strong enough to cause slowdowns on the platform, and the show's accounts confirmed that no episode would follow. The episode shows how much an open ending can be read as a promise: the show left you the choice of believing Mike, and part of the audience preferred to see a secret in it.
How the Duffers worked with the theories
The creators wrote Season 5 knowing the theories. Thanks to the pandemic, they had been able to sketch the whole last season even before the fourth was shot; once that one was out, they received the fans' and their collaborators' feedback, and reworked several points, including the end of the show, while keeping the essential of the plan.
Two revelations were deliberately kept for the last chapter: Eleven's doubt about the possibility of a happy ending, and Henry's origin, the briefcase from the mine. Everything else was meant to be settled before, in the second volume. That is why the theory “Will is linked to Henry” is confirmed as early as episode 4, while “who is the true evil” waits for episode 8.
Matt Duffer had floated the idea himself by promising the finale would say "who the real evil is." The play The First Shadow had already suggested that an outside force had made Henry turn. The fans who had put the two together were right.
The clues that were under our eyes

The title of Chapter 2
"The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler" copies "The Vanishing of Will Byers." Lucas himself notes that the date of the kidnapping is close to the 1983 anniversary.

As early as episode 4, Max explains that a memory too terrifying keeps Henry from entering the cave. The memory is the mine, and the briefcase.
