The opening: Will, 1983
November 12, 1983. Will Byers, twelve, hides in the Upside Down, chased by the Demogorgon. He shoots at it, climbs a tree, falls and loses consciousness. The creature does not kill him: it carries him to the town library, where Vecna is waiting. He tells Will that his plan can finally begin, that they will do beautiful things together, and infects him with a tentacle. The bond between Will and Henry Creel, hinted at since Season 2, dates from that night.

Hawkins under quarantine, November 3, 1987
Almost four years later, the town is under military quarantine, and the population believes in a natural phenomenon. The Byers live at the Wheelers', to Ted's dismay. Eleven, hunted by the army, trains in secret with Hopper and Joyce. Robin and Steve host radio WSQK, where Robin marks the 500th episode of her morning show. Murray delivers smuggled gear and reports that the army is preparing a big operation in the Upside Down: Nancy decides on a new "crawl," the word from the dungeons of the role-playing game, and Robin announces it on air in code, with the song "Upside Down."
The crawls: Hopper explores the Upside Down sector by sector looking for Vecna, followed from the real world. More than thirty already, without incident. Eleven wants to go; Hopper refuses. Since neither she nor Will can feel Vecna, part of the group believes he is dead; Nancy and Mike want proof.

The Crawl that goes wrong
Dustin, attacked by his bullies on Eddie's grave, stained with a snake's blood, misses the crawl; Joyce sends Jonathan with Steve in Will's place. Hopper goes through the tunnels under the town, breaks into the military base, and hijacks an army truck at the moment it crosses a portal to the Upside Down. A Demogorgon attacks the convoy and kills the soldiers; Hopper, wounded, flees into the woods. Will, who has seen the attack through the creature's eyes, collapses.
Mr. WhatsitThe name comes from a children's novel, “A Wrinkle in Time”, where Mrs Whatsit is a kindly presence. A teacher catches Holly talking alone; Karen worries; Holly explains to Mike that her friend warned her about the monsters.
The last scene: the fissure
At the Wheelers', Holly hears her parents arguing about her and goes up to her room. Karen, who has been drinking, runs a bath; Ted plays golf in the yard. Will wakes and warns: something is heading toward the Wheeler house. Eleven and Nancy race by car, Mike and Lucas by bike. In her room, Holly sees a crack form in the ceiling, and a Demogorgon comes through it. The title sequence drops there; the attack itself is told in the next episode.
Why this episode matters
"The Crawl" links the first season to the last: Will and Holly, the two children of the Byers wall in 1983, are Henry's two targets in 1987. It also sets the season's rule: Will sees through the creatures' eyes, and it is he who warns. Everything that follows flows from the library prologue.

Behind the scenes: who wrote and directed “The Crawl”
The episode is written and directed by the Duffer Brothers themselves, like almost every first and last chapter of the show. Ross Duffer presented it as his favorite episode of the season and one of the most packed with events: where the previous seasons took time to set up ordinary life before the supernatural broke in, this one “sprints from the start.”
The opening sequence took a technical sleight of hand. Young Will of 1983 is played by an eleven-year-old child, Luke Kokotek, onto whom Noah Schnapp's face was applied digitally by the studio Wētā FX. The method had already been used in Season 4 to de-age Eleven, with a body double named Martie Blair. Noah Schnapp says he asked Millie Bobby Brown for advice before directing, in a way, his own double.
The “Mr. Whatsit” character, Holly's imaginary friend, comes from Madeleine L'Engle's novel A Wrinkle in Time, published in 1962, a book the Duffers were reading at Holly's age. An earlier version of the script made Henry the Polar Express conductor, with a train to the North Pole; the idea was dropped because the book aimed at children who were too young, and because “Whatsit” sounded more unsettling.

Robin celebrates her 500th "Morning Squawk" on WSQK. The radio is not a set: it is the group's command post, and it is from there that the season's final plan will leave.

The track Robin plays on the air is the coded signal that warns everyone a crawl will happen that same evening. The song title says everything, without the army being able to understand.

Eddie's grave is fouled with the blood of the snake Dustin had used for a prank. His bullies make him pay, and it is that assault that makes him miss the crawl.

The Byers have been living at the Wheelers' since the quarantine, much to Ted's displeasure. The forced cohabitation explains the tension between Joyce and Jonathan, and Will's presence in the house at the moment of the attack.

Dr. Kay's right-hand man gets a simple order: find Eleven. The whole military thread of the season starts from that order.
How the episode was received
Critics generally praised this return, especially the performances of Linda Hamilton as Dr. Kay, Maya Hawke, Joe Keery, and Gaten Matarazzo. The most frequent complaint is about the amount of exposition: you have to explain the quarantine, the crawls, the hunt for Eleven, and the state of each character nineteen months after the Season 4 ending, and the episode sometimes does it through dialogue more than through action.
For a fan, that exhibit is also a mine of information. It fixes the state of Hawkins in November 1987 and lays out every piece that will serve through the last chapter: the wall Hopper never crossed, Will's leftover connection to the hive, Holly and her invisible friend, and Max still in a coma, her headphones on her ears.
