When did the last episode come out
On December 31, 2025, at 17 h Los Angeles time, or January 1, 2026 at 2 a.m. in France. It came out alone, six days after volume 2, like a third volume all by itself. Its date had been announced on May 31, 2025, at the same time as the two volumes, and never moved.
It is the platform's first series episode to be released simultaneously in theaters: more than 350 movie theaters in North America screened it on December 31 and January 1, sold out.

How long it lasts
More than two hours: it is, with "The Piggyback" from season 4 and its 139 minutes, one of the two longest episodes of the show, and the reason for the theatrical screening. It watches like a film, with a battle, a resolution and an epilogue. Plan the whole evening.

The title
"The Rightside Up" is the inverse of "The Upside Down," the English name of the Upside Down, and the title of the last episode of season 1. The first finale was called The Upside Down, the last is called The Rightside Up: the show ends by putting the world back in its place.
The 42nd episode8 + 9 + 8 + 9 + 8: the last episode is the 42nd. There is no episode 9 in Season 5, and no season after.
What it contains
Three movements. First the final battle in the Abyss, the dimension beyond the Upside Down, where Eleven and Will face Henry, and where Joyce gives the last blow. Then the destruction of the Upside Down, by a bomb, and a choice of Eleven who stays on the other side. Finally an epilogue, eighteen months later, in May 1989, where each character receives their last scene: diplomas, a marriage proposal, and a game of Dungeons & Dragons to finish.
There is no scene after the title sequence, and Eleven's fate is left open: the show shows neither her death nor her survival.
How to watch it
After the seven previous episodes, with no pause if possible with the seventh, “The Bridge,” which stops at the door of the Abyss. Two and a half hours ahead of you, the lights off, and if possible with others: that is how its creators thought it, and why they showed it in theaters.

How the last episode was made
The chapter is written and directed by the Duffer Brothers, their twentieth script for the show. The cast discovered the text on September 8, 2024, at a group table read on Stage 16 of the Atlanta studios, in the presence of Shawn Levy. The Duffers do not share their scripts in advance: the actors therefore lived the ending together, that day, while filming was already well along.
Finn Wolfhard has said he feared a reception comparable to that of the Game of Thrones finale. The Duffers have said they wanted the opposite: no slaughter, a feeling of satisfaction. The season's edit was finished in October 2025; the soundtrack was released on January 1, 2026, and a behind-the-scenes documentary, One Last Adventure, on January 12.

The structure explains the runtime. An ordinary episode would have cut after Henry's death; this one stacks a second climax then a long epilogue that gives each character an exit. That is also why it was shown in theaters: you watch it like a film, with its two peaks and its descent.
“The Rightside Up”, the flip of the Upside Down
The title inverts that of Season 1's last chapter, “The Upside Down.” In English, “right side up” means what is the right way up, put back the right way. That is the episode's program: destroy the Upside Down, close the gates, and put Hawkins right side up, through that spring of 1989 when the army has left and the town is rebuilding.
The title also says something about the characters. Each of them had been upside down for ten years, Will first. The epilogue sets them upright: Will leaves town and feels in the right place, Max walks, Hopper starts a family, Dustin gives a speech in front of the whole high school. What the show calls the right side up is not a victory, it is an ordinary life finally possible.
What to have in mind before watching it
The last chapter re-explains nothing. It takes as known the Hawkins quarantine, the circular wall of the Upside Down and its nature as a wormhole, Dustin's theory about the bomb, Kali's presence, Max's coma then her waking, the kidnapping of the eight children, and Will's coming out. All of that is set in the seven previous chapters, especially in “The Bridge,” which lays out the complete plan.
You are better off watching it right after the second volume, or after rereading a recap of episodes 5 to 7. Seen on its own, it stays spectacular but loses its charge: every goodbye in the epilogue answers a conflict settled in the earlier episodes, the falling-out between Steve and Dustin, the breakup of Nancy and Jonathan, Hopper's fear of losing a second daughter.
