Stranger Things 1985: the summer of the mall, not a school year

Universe · Hawkins · The summer

Spoiler warningThis article tells the summer of 1985, including Billy's death and Hopper's disappearance at the end of that season.
In brief

A summer, a packed week, a national holiday. In this article: why this season takes place out of school, what the mall changes in the town, what July 4 decides, and why 1985 is neither 1984 nor 1986.

1985 is not a school year. It is a summer, a new mall, and a town celebrating July 4 while everything breaks. Sticking that date onto the whole show erases the other years.

The essentials

  • The season: the summer of 1985, not the return to school
  • The town: a new mall, shops that close
  • The day: July 4, holiday and battle
  • The end of summer: Billy dies, Hopper disappears from the town

The table stops you from setting a Christmas tree, a return to school or a dance on that year. 1985 has a climate. It is not the climate of the other seasons.

A summer, not a return to school

The year before, the town still lived to the rhythm of school: Halloween, the tunnels, the winter dance. 1985 opens on vacation. The children are no longer in the school hallways. They are at the pool, at work, or shut inside a love story the adults find too long.

That gap is not a set detail. It changes who can see what. An adult working at the mall crosses the group without being their teacher. A mother notices magnets that no longer hold, because she is home in broad daylight, not because a bell has emptied the classrooms.

Looking, in this season, for homework, a locker or a match at the start of school is looking for the year before. The story has changed season in the weather sense, not only in the sense of a new chapter.

The visible calendar fits in a few days: the end of June, then July 4. September is not there. The first cold is not there. When a picture shows coats and a return to school, it has left 1985. The summer, here, is the subject, not a set you cross to get to class.

The mall, brand new

The place that organises the summer is called Starcourt. It is new. It is large enough to empty the old shops downtown, and loud enough for a whole town to meet there. The residents grumble. The teenagers work there. It is the visible heart of 1985.

Underneath, the story hides something else: an installation that is nothing like a shop. The article on the Russians tells that part. Here, we stop at what the date changes. A mall of this size, in 1985, in a small town, is not an interchangeable set. It is a cause. Shops close. Jobs move. The group no longer searches only in the woods.

These lines do not give it an invented opening date. We know it is already there at the start of summer, and that it did not exist as a set the previous autumn. Six months earlier, the town did not have that roof.

It is also a workplace, not only a stroll. Teenagers spend their days there. Parents take Saturday's outing there. The group no longer needs a wood to cross paths: the new roof is enough. When the fear comes back, it comes back where the town has decided to gather.

July 4

The town celebrates July 4. A fair, a crowd, heat. It is not background noise. It is the day the threads of the summer meet, at the mall and around it. The last chapter of this season is called The Battle of Starcourt. The name says the place. The calendar says the day.

Billy dies that day, protecting Eleven. It is not an ellipsis you can move to August. Hopper disappears from the town. The group believes him lost. The following season will show that he was taken, not killed. Mixing the two endings kills a man the story keeps.

Eleven loses her powers in that battle, then leaves with the Byers. The summer therefore does not end on a class photo. It ends on a town given back to silence, and on friends separated. July 5 is not told as a party. The party was the day before, and it went badly.

Pool, ice cream, heat

What you see first is not the underside of the mall. It is the heat. A pool. An ice-cream counter, Scoops Ahoy, where the summer is spent in uniform. Adults who find that the teenagers' stories last too long. A town that looks open, because class is over.

That surface matters. For a moment it makes you believe the fear left with the cold. The magnets that no longer hold, the lifeguard who disappears, the counter used as a lookout: all of that happens in broad daylight. This summer does not have the fog of November. It has a light that is too strong, and under that light the town cracks.

We do not recite every chapter here. We keep the climate. A scene with locker rooms, melting ice cream, a crowd in tank tops can be from 1985. A scene with a locker, homework or a pumpkin is from another year.

What 1985 is not

1985 is not November 1983, the month when the friend disappears in the woods. It is not the year of the dance. That is the winter of 1984. It is not the month of March when the group is scattered. That is 1986. A search that types only the year often lands on the summer, because the summer is the most colourful. It is not the only one.

It is not a whole year shown day by day either. The story tightens on the end of June and the first days of July. Before that, a prologue recalls that in June 1984, somewhere else, another attempt failed. That prologue is not the summer of Hawkins. It is there to say that a year has passed.

Vecna is not the Mind Flayer, and the Mind Flayer is not the Demogorgon. The summer of 1985 belongs to the second: the mass that possesses bodies, and the flesh it assembles. The prince with one bloom is the one from 1983. The man with the clock will come later. Sticking all three onto July makes a catch-all year.

Before that summer, and after

Before, it is a town of autumn and school. After, it will be a town of March, then a town of autumn again, years later. 1985 is the only full summer. That is why it looks like another show: swimsuits, ice cream, neon, instead of jackets and bikes in the fog.

The mall does not come back as a yearly tradition. The summer after is not filmed. When the story resumes, it is March 1986, and several of those who lived through July are no longer in the same house. The date broke the group as much as the monster did.

You can therefore answer the question "what happens in 1985" without reciting every chapter. A summer happens, a new roof, a national holiday, a death, a disappearance, a departure. The rest of the chapters serve those six things. They do not replace them.

A weather seasonIf a sentence places the school dance or the November lights in 1985, it mixes two winters with this summer. 1985 does not have that calendar.

To remember1985 is a summer, not a return to school and not the whole show. Starcourt is new. It empties the shops and hides something else underneath. July 4 is the day of the holiday and of the battle. Billy dies. Hopper disappears from the town, and is not killed.
