Spoiler warningThis page follows the Mind Flayer from 1984 through its final form in the last chapter of season 5. If you have not finished the show, stop after “Anatomy”.

The Mind Flayer, Mind Flayer in the original version, is the giant spider-shaped shadow that dominates the sky of the Upside Down, and the antagonist of seasons 2 and 3 of Stranger Things. It does not hunt like the Demogorgon: it possesses. Will in 1984, Billy and the Flayed in 1985, then, season 5 reveals, Henry Creel since childhood. This page brings together everything: its nature, its forms, its hosts, its two defeats, and its true place in the mythology of the show.

The essentials

  • Nature: a consciousness made of particles, a hive mind
  • Form: a titanic spider-legged shadow in the sky of the other world
  • First appearance: season 2, October 1984, in Will's visions
  • Method: possession: it inhabits bodies, human or creature
  • Known hosts: Will Byers (1984), Billy Hargrove and the Flayed (1985), Henry Creel
  • Weakness: heat; and the closing of the gates, which cuts it off from its hosts
  • Name borrowed from: Dungeons & Dragons, by Dustin

What is the Mind Flayer?

Mind Flayer: The shadow (Stranger Things)
The shadow. What Will sees above the school in 1984: a silhouette as tall as a building, made of smoke, looking at him.

The first time you see it, it is in a nightmare. Will Byers, a year after his return from the Upside Down, has “episodes”: he is suddenly in the inverted version of the school, and in the red sky a huge form rises, made of shadow and particles, with long legs coming down toward him. It has no face. It does not need one.

It is Dustin who names it, as always: the Mind Flayer, after a Dungeons & Dragons creature able to control minds. The name fits. Because this thing does not move through our world: it sends pieces of itself into it, particles that enter a body and command it from the inside. The creature stays on the other side. Its hosts do the work.

For two seasons, viewers believed he was the master of the Upside Down, the brain behind the Demogorgon and the demodogs. Season 4 seemed to say the opposite: Vecna would be the one in command. Season 5 reversed the reading one last time, and that is where this pillar becomes necessary.

The real Mind Flayer, the one from the gameIn Dungeons & Dragons, the mind flayer, or illithid, is a humanoid octopus-headed creature that feeds on brains and commands slaves by thought. Dustin mostly keeps the idea of a mind that controls others, like a hive. That is the key to the whole show: the creatures are not animals, they are fingers.

The Mind Flayer season by season

1984Season 2: the shadow and the spy

On the night of Halloween, the shadow catches Will and enters him through the mouth. The boy becomes a spy against his will: the creature sees what he sees, knows what he knows, and sends the lab soldiers into a trap at the bottom of the tunnels it has dug under Hawkins. Its demodogs live there. The group discovers that heat makes it suffer. In Hopper's cabin, Joyce, Jonathan, and Nancy heat Will until the shadow comes out of him screaming. Eleven closes the lab gate, and the Mind Flayer, cut off from our world, stands in the sky of the Snow Ball, on the other side, powerless.

1985Season 3: the flesh

A piece of it stayed on this side. Woken by a Russian machine trying to reopen the gate under the Starcourt mall, it changes method: no more spy, an army. It possesses Billy Hargrove in an abandoned steelworks, then, through Billy, dozens of Hawkins residents, the Flayed, who eat chemicals and melt into a paste of flesh. That paste assembles into a monster several meters high, all teeth and tentacles, which hunts Eleven into the mall. On July 4, Billy holds it, Joyce closes the Russian gate, and the body of flesh collapses, dead. The shadow, for its part, stays on the other side.

Mind Flayer: The steelworks (Stranger Things)
The steel mill. The Mind Flayer's lair in the summer of 1985, where it lures Billy and assembles its army of Flayed.

1986Season 4: the missing one who commands

No shadow in the sky of season 4. The villain is named Vecna, he has a face, a story, a human name. In a 1979 memory, though, you see Henry Creel, thrown into the Upside Down, reach his hand toward a cloud of particles and give it form: the spider-shadow is born under his fingers. The Mind Flayer would then be his creation, his general, his armed wing. The season lets you believe it.

1987Season 5: the truth, and the colossus

Season 5 turns the card over. Will, linked to the hive, goes back through Henry's memory and discovers that as a child, in a mine, Henry opened a briefcase that held a fragment of this entity. Henry never created it: it contaminated him, and he adopted it. In the last chapter, when Henry dies under Joyce's axe, the Mind Flayer rises one last time, in a colossal form, a titan of flesh and shadow, which the group brings down before detonating the bomb that destroys the Upside Down. That is its true end.

Anatomy and methods

The particles

The Mind Flayer is not a body: it is a cloud of spores and black dust that takes the form it wants. The shadow in the sky, the piece inside Will, the paste of the Flayed are the same thing.

Possession

It enters through the mouth, settles in the mind, and commands. The host keeps its memory, not its will. Will describes it as a cold room you cannot leave.

The hive

Demogorgons, demodogs, Flayed, demobats: everything that lives in the other world answers to a single consciousness. Closing a gate is cutting the thread.

The heat

Its only physical weakness: the radiators that drive the shadow out of Will, the sauna that reveals Billy. It comes from a frozen, cold world.

The detail nobody noticesThe Mind Flayer never speaks. Not a word in five seasons. Its hosts speak for it, Vecna speaks for it, but the entity itself has neither voice nor face. It is the only creature in the show whose want we will never know, except what its spokespeople say.

Its hosts

Host When What he does with it How it ends
Will Byers 1984 A spy: see through his eyes, know what he knows Driven out by the heat, in Hopper's cabin
Billy Hargrove 1985 A recruiter: abduct residents to possess them Billy dies free, holding the creature back
The Flayed 1985 Of matter: melted into a body of flesh The body collapses when the gate closes
Henry Creel since childhood A vessel, then a spokesman: Vecna Beheaded by Joyce in 1987; the shadow dies afterward

Not to be confused

People often say In reality The landmark
The Mind Flayer is a giant Demogorgon No: a consciousness of particles, with no body of its own It possesses, the Demogorgon hunts
Vecna created the Mind Flayer No: the entity contaminated Henry as a child, he then shaped it The mine briefcase, revealed in season 5
The Starcourt monster is the Mind Flayer It is a body built from the Flayed; the shadow stays on the other side The body dies, the entity does not
He died in 1985 Only its flesh form dies; it comes back as a titan in 1987 The last chapter of the show

A subtler confusion: the tunnels under Hawkins, in 1984, are not the body of the Mind Flayer. They are roots, vines of the other world growing into ours, and through which the hive breathes. When Eleven closes the gate, they die with the demodogs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Mind Flayer in Stranger Things?

It is the antagonist of seasons 2 and 3: a consciousness made of particles, which appears as a giant spider-legged shadow in the sky of the Upside Down. It does not hunt, it possesses: Will in 1984, Billy and the Flayed in 1985. Its name comes from a Dungeons & Dragons creature, chosen by Dustin.

What is the difference between the Mind Flayer and Vecna?

Vecna is Henry Creel, a transformed human, who thinks, speaks, and chooses his victims. The Mind Flayer is an entity with no body and no voice. Season 5 reveals they are linked: a fragment of the entity contaminated Henry as a child, and Vecna became its spokesman. Two natures, one mind.

How is the Mind Flayer defeated in season 2?

By heat and the closing of the gate. Joyce, Jonathan, and Nancy heat Will with radiators until the shadow comes out of his body, while Eleven closes the lab gate. Cut off from our world, the Mind Flayer loses its demodogs and stays a prisoner on the other side.

What are the Flayed?

The Hawkins residents possessed by the Mind Flayer in summer 1985, starting with Billy and his coworker Heather. They eat chemicals, lose all will, then melt into a paste of flesh that assembles into a giant monster. That monster is destroyed at Starcourt on July 4.

Does the Mind Flayer come back in season 5?

Yes, in two forms. First in Henry's memory, where Will discovers that a fragment of the entity contaminated him as a child. Then, in the last chapter, after Henry's death, the entity rises as a titan of flesh and shadow that the group brings down before destroying the Upside Down.

Why does the Mind Flayer fear heat?

The show shows it without explaining it: it comes from the Upside Down, a cold frozen dimension, and its particles cannot stand high temperatures. That is what Will understands in 1984, and what the group uses to exorcise him and to unmask Billy in a sauna in 1985.
