Stranger Things season 4 episode 8: the episode file
The eighth chapter carries the same title in French and in the original version: "Papa," that is Chapter Eight: Papa. Matt and Ross Duffer both wrote and directed it. It runs one hour and twenty-five minutes, that is about eighty-five minutes, and it came out on July 1, 2022.
This date matters. The season was released in two parts: seven chapters on May 27, 2022, then two on July 1. "Papa" and "The Piggyback" therefore form a block, seen in one sitting by almost every viewer, after five weeks of waiting and a month of speculation.
Its place explains its pace. It follows the ninety-eight minutes of revelations in "The Massacre at Hawkins Lab," which had revealed Vecna's identity, and precedes the two hours and nineteen minutes of "The Piggyback." Between the two, "Papa" is a buffer: you count the necessary deaths there, you buy weapons there, you bury a father there.
The action takes place in March 1986, on four stages: the small town in Indiana, a silo in the Nevada desert, the road that links California to that silo, and a prison in Kamchatka.

The recap of "Papa," in order
The episode picks up where the previous one stopped: Nancy is a prisoner of the trance. Vecna walks her through the Creel house, then shows her the town in ruins, a black sky, open rifts, bodies, an immense creature above the roofs. He lets her go on purpose. He wants her to tell.
Awake, Nancy delivers the count. Four chimes, four deaths, four doors: the curse was never a revenge, it is arithmetic. Three doors are already open. One is missing, and the target has been named since the cemetery. Max volunteers to serve as bait, while the others will pass to the other side to burn the monster's body.
The rest of the chapter is a preparation. The group goes down to the War Zone, a weapons and surplus store, to equip the two teams. At the same moment, Eleven discovers the plan from a distance and demands to go home; Brenner holds her by force, and Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan's army attacks the site. In Russia, Hopper, Joyce, and Murray look for the way out.
-
Opening The vision Vecna offers Nancy
Still in the trance, Nancy sees the town split open by rifts, a sky of ashes, and an immense creature. Vecna lets her go so she will carry the message.
-
The count Four chimes, four doors
Each death opens a door, and it takes four. Three have been open since Chrissy, Fred, and Patrick. The fourth is waiting for Max.
-
The plan Max volunteers as bait
She offers to go into a trance in the attic of the Creel house to occupy the monster, while a second team will attack his body from the other side.
-
The store The weapons from the War Zone
Molotov cocktails, rifles, ammunition. Robin runs into Vickie, Nancy runs into Jason Carver buying a revolver, and Erica counts the basketball team's jackets.
-
The road Will's painting, in the van
On the road to Nevada, Will offers Mike the painting he had been keeping: a crest with a heart, because Mike is what holds the group together.
-
The trap Brenner holds Eleven at the Nina Project
She has seen her friends' plan and wants to leave. Brenner chains Owens, neutralizes her, and confesses that he was making her look into the dark to find Henry.
-
The assault Sullivan attacks the Nevada site
His men shoot the silo's staff. Brenner comes back up to the surface with Eleven, a control collar on the teenager's neck, under an armed helicopter.
-
The desert Brenner dies, Eleven leaves
The boys' van creates the diversion. Eleven brings down the helicopter and flips the vehicles. Brenner, hit, takes the collar off her and asks to be understood.
-
Kamchatka The way out through the sewers
Murray holds the guards at gunpoint, Dmitri finds an air vent, and the group leaves the prison through the sewers. Yuri, still tied up and taken along with them, offers his helicopter, which he has never flown.
Each thread separately: Hawkins. California and Russia
In Hawkins, the chapter is a morning of errands and an evening of goodbyes. After Nancy's count, the group splits into two teams: Max and Lucas will hold the attic of the Creel house, Erica will stand guard outside; Nancy, Steve, Robin, Dustin, and Eddie will pass to the other side. They need something to burn a body.
The War Zone is the episode's most telling set: a surplus store full of families equipping themselves, because the town still believes in a cult of high schoolers. Robin approaches Vickie, whom Steve pushed her to talk to, and steps back when she sees Dan kiss her. At the weapons counter, Nancy runs into Jason Carver, who is buying a revolver and asks her if the boys from the Hellfire club are with her. Erica spots the basketball team's jackets and presses everyone to leave.
Two short scenes carry the emotion. In the stolen RV, Steve tells Nancy the future he invents for himself: six children, an RV, one summer a year on the roads. And Erica admits to Lucas that she came to all his games except the one that mattered, because he is still her brother. The chapter closes on the group driving toward the Creel house, at nightfall.
The California thread fits in a pizza delivery van. Mike fears Eleven will no longer need him once her powers are back. Will then offers him the painting he had been carrying since Lenora: a crest where Mike wears a heart, because he is what holds the group together. Will talks about Eleven, and talks about himself; Jonathan understands it in silence. Shortly after, military tire tracks on the trail lead the van to the silo.
At the Nina Project, Eleven again has what she needs to look for her friends from a distance. She sees the plan, understands that Max is next, and demands to go home. Brenner refuses: she is not ready. He chains Owens to a pipe, neutralizes the teenager, then confesses what she did not know. If he made her look so long into the dark, it was also to find Henry, banished to the other side, whose disappearance he never believed.
In Russia, the tone stays tense burlesque. Murray holds the guards at gunpoint while Dmitri pulls the basement plans from a doctor and Joyce bandages Hopper's arm. The arena Demogorgon, for its part, is out of its pit and killing guards in the corridors. The group crosses a room of tanks where Demodogs are kept, finishes a dissected creature on a cart, and spots a tank holding a black matter come from the Upside Down. Dmitri finds an air vent; they go out through the sewers. Outside, Yuri offers his helicopter, named Katinka, which he has never flown.
The key moment: Brenner's death, and what it changes
Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan's assault is not aimed at a site, it is aimed at a teenage girl. His men shoot the silo's staff, methodically. Brenner comes back up through a hatch with Eleven, a control collar around her neck, and reaches the surface. A helicopter holds a hover above them, a shooter in the open door.
The van arrives at that instant and pulls the attention away. Brenner takes several bullets while shielding her. Eleven, for her part, gets up: she stops the aircraft in midair, brings it down, then flips the vehicles left on the trail. It is the first open demonstration of powers she had lost in the summer of 1985.
Then comes the scene that gives the chapter its title. Brenner, on the ground, takes the collar off the neck of the child he made. He tells her he never wanted anything but to help her, and asks her to say she understands. She does not say it. She takes his hand, says goodbye, and walks away while he dies on the sand.
What changes comes down to three points. The word, first: "Papa" was a title imposed on all the numbered children of the program, and Eleven stops giving it back to him. The guardianship, next: the man who claimed to decide when she would be ready disappears, and she decides alone to go home. The story's mechanism, finally: without this death, no departure for Indiana, therefore no finale. The chapter does not move the monster one step forward; it frees the weapon facing him.

What "Papa" sets up for the finale
Everything the last chapter carries out is set here. The count of the doors gives the objective: prevent the fourth. The split into two teams gives the finale its shape. The War Zone weapons give the tools, and it is these Molotov cocktails and these rifles that will serve on the other side, in the attic of the Creel house.
Jason's revolver too. The basketball captain leaves the store armed, convinced that Mike's friends killed Chrissy; he will go back up to the Creel house at the worst moment. The Russian prison tank is the second hidden piece: what Murray burns in it in the next chapter will be felt thousands of miles away.
Will's speech, finally, is a script mechanism as much as an emotional scene. It gives Mike back the conviction that he matters to Eleven, and it is that conviction, said out loud at the darkest moment, that will break the monster's hold on her.
The sequel is known: the plan half succeeds. The monster is burned and disappears, Eddie dies under the Demobats, Max dies one minute before Eleven brings her back, and the fourth door opens anyway. The town splits in a cross. The final season picks up a year and a half later, under military quarantine, with Max still in a coma.
The details and references to notice
The title is a word, not a character. "Papa" is what Brenner demanded of the children of the program. The chapter sets that word against another idea of family, the one Will describes in the van: made of people who choose each other. Two definitions, a few minutes apart.
The chime is worth hearing again. Vecna's clock always strikes four times before it kills. Nancy is the first to make the connection: the count was given from the start, and nobody had heard it.
A useful clarification, because the confusion is common: the Demogorgon of the Russian pit is not Vecna, and it is not the Mind Flayer. These are three distinct entities, and nothing in this chapter confuses them.
The War Zone did not exist before this episode, and it says a lot: a town arming itself against a role-playing club. The collar put around Eleven's neck says something else: the last object the program imposes on her is a leash. On the lighter side, Yuri's helicopter carries the name of a first love and has never flown.
One statistic remains that sums up the chapter: no inhabitant of Hawkins dies here. The only named dead falls far from Indiana, in a desert, and it is the one through whom the whole story had begun.

Frequently asked questions
What happens in episode 8 of season 4?
Nancy comes out of her trance with Vecna's count: four deaths, four doors, and one is missing. Max volunteers as bait, the group arms itself at the War Zone, Eleven is held at the Nina Project and then freed by Brenner's death, and Hopper, Joyce, and Murray escape the Russian prison.
Who dies in "Papa"?
A single named character: Dr. Martin Brenner, shot in the Nevada desert while shielding Eleven. Added to that are the Nina Project staff, the helicopter crew, and guards from the Russian prison. No inhabitant of Hawkins dies in this chapter.
Why is the episode called "Papa"?
Because it is the word Brenner imposed on the numbered children of his program, and because the chapter is the one of his death. The title also points, underneath, to the other definition of family that Will describes to Mike in the van: the one you choose.
What does Nancy see in Vecna's vision?
A town split open by rifts, a black sky, bodies, and an immense creature above the roofs. Vecna lets her go on purpose so she will report what she saw, and it is from this vision that the group draws the rule of the four doors.
Does Eleven get her powers back in this episode?
The Nina program gives them back to her, and this chapter is the one where she uses them again in the open. She first watches her friends from a distance, then brings down the army helicopter and flips the vehicles left on the trail.
Does Max die in episode 8?
No. She only volunteers to serve as bait in the attic of the Creel house. What happens to her next is played in the next chapter, "The Piggyback."
