Stranger Things: One Way or Another, Nancy's novel between seasons 4 and 5
Spin-off · Novel · Nancy and Robin
A graduation, a bridge, a hideout. The article gives the book's fact sheet, what chapter 1 shows, the investigation up to the hospital, the duo with Robin, then three links to the next season. The end of the novel stays at the very end, on its own.
Stranger Things One Way or Another is a novel, not an episode. Two months after the quake, Nancy investigates with Robin. Here you follow the book, and then only what it sets up for the rest of the story.

The novel in brief
Caitlin Schneiderhan is a writer on the show. She wrote episode 3 of season 4, “Chapter Three: The Monster and the Superhero”. She also wrote episode 3 of season 5, The Turnbow Trap, directed by Frank Darabont. This book is a novel spin-off: it does not replace any chapter.
It is her second novel, after Flight of Icarus, about Eddie Munson. That first book came out on October 31, 2023. In France the Lumen edition is dated January 18, 2024. The page on the tie-in novels already presents both books.
In the United States Random House Worlds publishes the hardcover on December 2, 2025, 304 pages. The audiobook comes out the same day, 10 hr 02 min, read by Louisa Zhu. Volume 1 of season 5 came out on November 26, 2025. The novel arrives six days later.
In France, the French edition is published by Lumen, on January 8, 2026, 379 pages, in paperback. The translation is by Elorri Nickel and Camille Cosson. The stated readership starts at age 12. The subtitle of this edition is “Une enquête de Nancy Wheeler”. The title also borrows a Blondie song, from the album Parallel Lines (1978), written by Debbie Harry and Nigel Harrison. The single comes out in May 1979.

Hawkins, two months after the quake
To follow the novel you need the end of season 4. In March 1986 four rifts meet, the town is cut by a trench, and Max is in a coma. The detail is in the explanation of the end of season 4. The book does not replay that night.
In the novel, two months later, Nancy hunts Vecna without finding him. Her departure for Emerson in the fall is in doubt. That is the starting point of the publisher's summary.
Chapter 1, set around 22:00, has been published as an excerpt. Nancy, Robin, Steve and Jonathan search the Farrier funeral home, in ruins, in a disaster zone, near the trench. They follow a memo from the Hawkins Post: flickering lights, voices. They find only fake white roses. The excerpt also puts Max in the hospital, in a coma.
In the novel a quarter of the residents have left town, and the army has put Hawkins under quarantine. Those are facts from the book, not a scene added to the show.
From the graduation to the bridge
In the novel the 1986 graduation has a guest speaker after Principal Higgins. Georgia Miller is from the class of 1962. She founded Hearth & Home, a housing-aid charity that repairs and rebuilds the houses after the quake. Joey Taft, a classmate, grows uneasy. Nancy thinks she recognizes the fear of Vecna's victims, Chrissy's, then Fred's and Patrick's. She suspects he is next.
That same evening Joey calls her. He arranges to meet her at a bridge, on the edge of town. He does not come. Under the bridge, in the river, Nancy and Robin find his body. He has been shot. That is not Vecna's way. Beside him, a sheet full of numbers.
The next day, at the Hawkins Post, the new editor in chief is Sean Pullman. He is friendlier than Tom Holloway. In the novel every article must now be approved by the army. Pullman prefers a portrait of Georgia Miller to Joey's story. Nancy then sees Joey's friends, from the marching band, at the Lakeview Bakery. The day after, a man in a black suit follows her, and drives off in a sedan when she comes closer.
In the novel the hideout comes before the hospital. It is told in the next section. At the hospital Joey's grandmother is ill. Vickie lets Nancy and Robin in. The numbers on the sheet are prescription numbers. Other patients have fallen ill over the course of the month. The investigation stops here, before its resolution.

Nancy and Robin, a pair of investigators
The duo does not start in the novel. In 1986 they pose as students and visit Victor Creel at Pennhurst. The book picks them up already used to investigating together.
In the novel one scene puts them on Robin's roof, with beer and a police scanner. There they talk about their future.
Robin finds the hideout: the station WSQK. In the novel the DJ is called Jimmy “Fasthands” Lee, and he left town before the quarantine. Steve and Jonathan clear the place. The basement becomes their command post.
They do not always agree. On the evening of the bridge Robin first blames Nancy for lying about why they were there. The nickname “Nancy Drew”, already heard in 1985, is echoed in the subtitle A Nancy Wheeler Mystery. That nickname comes from her summer internship in the paper's offices, the Hawkins Post.
Black case imitating a front page of the Hawkins Post: “Strange Sightings Across Hawkins!” and an inset reading “Vecna Lives!”. It is not a front page from the novel and not a front page shown in the show.

What the novel sets up for season 5
This section touches on elements of season 5. It does not tell the plot. In the novel the WSQK hideout becomes, on screen, the 1987 headquarters. In episode 7 Lucas says that Jimmy “Fast Hands” left before the quarantine, that the basement is hidden behind a bookcase, that the station serves as cover, and that Robin is the DJ, with Steve on sound. Nancy is part of the group. She does not host the station.
The Byers arrive in the novel at Karen's request: help Mike empty the basement for them. On screen, on November 3, 1987, in The Crawl, they are staying with the Wheelers. Ted asks how long this is supposed to go on. The novel sets up the move. The episode shows it already done.
In the novel Nancy at one point refuses to fill in her application for Emerson, and wants to stay in Hawkins. Jonathan, for his part, will not go to Emerson. On screen, in Escape from Camazotz, he says “I never applied to Emerson”, and Nancy answers “I know”. In The Rightside Up she has left the university. “I dropped out.” The post at the Herald is an internship. “It's a trainee position.”
In the novel Karen and Nancy argue, then make up. The book sets up these three threads. It does not explain them.
The novel's resolution
Ending aside: the novel is written by a writer on the show. No novel is required to follow the episodes. If a gap appears, the screen wins.
Warning: what follows gives away the end of the novel. In the novel the sick were contaminated by chemical waste. Primrose Pharmaceuticals and Captain Rose are involved. Georgia Miller is killed. Agent Marquez investigates for the EPA. Nancy gets out. Robin arrives with the police after her message.
The callback belongs in this ending. In 1984, at Murray's, Barb's story was supposed to be watered down: toxins, a leak from the lab. “We water it down”, Nancy said. In the novel the contamination is real. It is not the same case.
