Spoiler warningThis page tells the whole California plot of season 4, including what happens to Eleven after the rink. If you have not seen season 4, stop after “Who is Angela”.

Angela is the queen of Lenora Hills High, in California, and the girl who made Eleven's life hell through the winter of 1985-1986. She has neither powers nor a monster behind her: just a crew, a smile, and a sense of spectacle. She humiliates Eleven in front of her class, then in front of a whole rink, and gets back the most discussed skate blow in Stranger Things. This page brings together everything: Lenora, the presentation, Rink-O-Mania, the milkshake, the skate, and what it sets off.

Who is Angela?

Angela has nothing supernatural about her, and that is what makes her so effective. At Lenora Hills High, where Eleven arrived after leaving Hawkins with the Byers, she rules a crew of three: Jake, her boyfriend, and two friends, Stacy and Chad. She spotted the new girl, quiet, badly dressed, who does not get the codes, and made her her target.

Season 4 opens on that Eleven: powerless since the battle of Starcourt, isolated, who writes to Mike that everything is fine and who is lying. Angela is the reason for the lie. She mocks her class presentation, her clothes, her first name, and she does it with a smile, in front of everyone, making sure nobody steps in.

What the show shows through her is what Eleven does not know how to do: answer ordinary cruelty. Faced with a Demogorgon, she closes her eyes and holds out her hand. Faced with Angela, she has nothing. Until the skate.

The presentationThe first blow happens in class. Eleven gives a presentation on her hero, Hopper, whom she believes is dead. Angela and her crew mock her in front of the teacher, turn her tribute into a joke, and Eleven goes silent. For a viewer who has watched three seasons, the scene is almost unbearable: the girl who closed a gate cannot find a word.

Angela in March 1986, day after day

Angela: Lenora Hills (Stranger Things)
Lenora Hills. A sunny high school, pastel lockers, and a new girl who does not get the codes.

March 1986Lenora Hills High

Eleven has been living in California since fall 1985 with Joyce, Will, and Jonathan. She is enrolled in a school where everyone knows everyone, and Angela has chosen her as a target. The mockery is daily, public, and Eleven hides it from Mike in her letters.

March 1986Mike's arrival

Mike comes to spend spring break in California. Eleven, who has described a perfect life to him, takes him to the Rink-O-Mania rink with Will. Angela, Jake, Stacy, and Chad are there too. Angela spots Eleven with a boy she does not know, and decides to make it a memorable night.

Angela: Rink-O-Mania (Stranger Things)
Rink-O-Mania. A rink, a song, a circle of skaters, and a milkshake dumped on the girl who saved the world.

March 1986Rink-O-Mania

Angela takes Eleven by the hand and leads her to the center of the rink. The DJ puts on “Wipeout”, and the crew starts circling her shouting insults, in front of Mike and Will who cannot help. When the song stops, Angela pours a chocolate milkshake over her head. Eleven runs to hide in a storeroom.

March 1986The skate

Eleven comes back out, walks up to Angela, and demands an apology. Angela laughs. Eleven hits her in the face with a roller skate. Angela collapses, her face bleeding, concussed. The rink freezes. Mike looks at Eleven as if he did not recognize her.

March 1986What the hit sets off

The next day, the police arrest Eleven for assault. It is in the patrol car that Dr. Owens picks her up, tells her Hawkins is in danger, and offers her the program that is supposed to restore her powers. Without Angela, Eleven would not have gone to Nevada, and season 4 would not have the same ending. Angela, for her part, disappears from the story after her concussion.

Why Angela hurts so much: Eleven without powers

To understand Angela's weight, you have to remember the state Eleven is in at the start of season 4. She lost her abilities in July 1985, at the same time as Hopper, whom she believes dead. She has left Hawkins, Mike, her friends, and everything that defined her. In California, she is no longer a weapon or a heroine: a teenager who never learned to talk to people her age, in a high school where that gap shows immediately.

Angela invented nothing: she spotted the crack and went in. The letters Eleven sends Mike tell about friends, outings, an ordinary life. All of it is fake. Will knows, and says nothing to Mike. When Mike shows up for the holidays, Eleven is caught between the lie she built and the reality Angela is about to remind her of, in public.

That is why the rink scene is written like a horror scene, with its music, its circle, its ritual. The show treats Angela's bullying exactly as it treats a monster: by staging helplessness. And that is why the skate, in a single gesture, sets off what follows: Owens, Nevada, the return of the powers. Angela is Eleven's last trial before becoming Eleven again.

It is worth noting what the show does not do: it gives Angela neither an excuse nor a backstory. No absent parents, no secret wound. She is cruel because she can be, and because nobody stops her. For a show that gives a childhood to each of its monsters, including Vecna, that silence is a choice.

What defines her

The smile

Angela never shouts. She humiliates with a smile, which makes every scene harder to watch than any monster.

The party

She never acts alone. Jake, Stacy, and Chad laugh, circle, film with their eyes. The bullying is a collective show.

The calculation

She sees Eleven with Mike and improvises a public humiliation. Rink-O-Mania is not an impulse: it is a staging.

Impunity

Nobody stops her, not the DJ, not the adults. It is Eleven, the victim, who ends up in handcuffs.

The detail nobody noticesAngela is the third bully in the show to make Eleven or her friends a target: Troy in 1983, Billy in 1984, her in 1986. The first two faced an Eleven who still had her powers. Angela is the only one to run into an unarmed Eleven, and the only one who ends up on the floor.

Key moments

  1. The presentation

Eleven talks about Hopper. Angela mocks her. The class laughs. The teacher lets it happen.

  2. The offered hand

Angela takes Eleven by the hand, like a friend. Eleven follows. The trap closes at the center of the rink.

  3. Wipeout

The song, the skates turning, the insults. Mike and Will, at the edge of the rink, do not move.

  4. The milkshake

Chocolate, on her head, in front of everyone. Eleven runs to hide in the storeroom.

  5. The skate

Eleven comes back out, asks for an apology, does not get one, and strikes. A single blow. The rink goes silent.

A note on the chronology: the rink scene takes place during spring break 1986, in the same days as the death of Chrissy Cunningham in Hawkins. While Eleven is in handcuffs on the West Coast, Vecna starts his murders in Indiana. The two plots only meet when Owens picks Eleven up.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Angela in Stranger Things?

Angela is the queen of Lenora Hills High, in California, where Eleven has lived since 1985 with the Byers. With her crew, Jake, Stacy, and Chad, she bullies Eleven every day, mocks her presentation on Hopper, then humiliates her at the Rink-O-Mania rink in March 1986.

What happens at the rink?

Angela leads Eleven to the center of the rink, the DJ puts on “Wipeout”, her crew circles her shouting insults, then Angela pours a chocolate milkshake over her head. Eleven hides, comes back out, demands an apology, and hits Angela in the face with a roller skate.

Does Angela die?

No. The skate blow gives her a concussion and a facial injury, but she survives. She does not appear again on the show after that scene. It is Eleven who pays the price: she is arrested for assault the next day.

Why does Eleven not use her powers against Angela?

Because she no longer has any. Since the battle of Starcourt in July 1985, Eleven has lost her abilities. Facing Angela, she is an ordinary teenager, and that is precisely what makes the bullying possible. Owens's program, after the arrest, aims to give them back to her.
