David Harbour: twenty years of supporting roles
David Harbour is a New York stage actor, trained at Dartmouth, nominated for a Tony Award in 2005 for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. In film, he strings together supporting roles: an agent in Quantum of Solace, a neighbor in Revolutionary Road, a government official in Suicide Squad. He has said that before the show he went through a period of doubt about his career and a depression.
The Duffers, who had spotted him in his villain roles, felt he had “waited too long” for a lead, and they cast him as Hopper in 2015. The character looks like him: a battered man who still has work to do.

Hopper, from grief to the gulag
Chief Jim Hopper starts the show as a broken father, widower of a daughter dead of cancer, who wakes with a beer and pills. Will's disappearance gets him back on his feet. He becomes Eleven's adoptive father, the man who closes the gate with her, the almost-lover of Joyce, the missing man of July 4, 1985, the Kamchatka prisoner, and finally the survivor who comes home to Hawkins.
David Harbour lost and regained weight between seasons for Russia, shaved his head, and has often said Hopper was the role of his life. His speech at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2017, about monsters and outcasts, has stayed famous.
Hopper's letterThe letter Eleven reads at the end of Season 3, where Hopper talks about the door you have to leave open “three inches”, was read in voice-over by the actor in one take. It is one of the most quoted scenes in the show.

What you know less about him
David Harbour was born in White Plains, in the state of New York, to real-estate-agent parents, and graduated from Dartmouth in 1997 with a degree in theater and Italian. He cut his teeth in a Shakespeare company in Maine, between 1994 and 1997, before Broadway in 1999 and a first television appearance the same year, as a waiter on Law & Order. His Tony Awards nomination, in 2005, rewarded his Nick in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.
As a young man in New York, he went to underground poker clubs and said he had known the gangster who inspired the Teddy KGB character in the film Rounders. Before Hopper, television had given him recurring roles in Pan Am, The Newsroom, and Manhattan; film, supporting parts in Brokeback Mountain, The Green Hornet, or End of Watch.
Hopper in 1987: the crawls, Kali, and a marriage proposal
The last season opens on a Hopper who explores the Upside Down sector by sector, at each crawl, while the others follow him from the radio station. He refuses to let Eleven come with him, for fear of losing her the way he lost his daughter, and he finally says it out loud in the second episode. Hurt from the first crawl, he captures Akers, infiltrates the military lab in the Upside Down, and finds Kali there in a trunk.
In the finale, Henry shows him a vision in which Eleven intends to die with Kali; he pulls her out of the bath and begs her to live, before promising to accept her choice. He is the one who arms the bomb with Murray. In spring 1989, he pushes Mike to go get his diploma, then proposes to Joyce at Enzo's and suggests Montauk, where he is offered a police-chief job. David Harbour played Hopper from forty to forty-nine.

The 2017 speech, and what it did to his fame
In January 2017, when the cast received the Screen Actors Guild award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series, it was David Harbour who took the mic. His speech, about actors who “push the limits” to say something about monsters and outcasts, was one of the most replayed moments of the ceremony, and made him, in the audience's eyes, the adult spokesman of the show.
He has used it with humor: a bet kept to get photographed with penguins in Antarctica, yearbook photos posed with a high-school girl and a wedding officiated, on challenges thrown out on social media, and a presence at conventions where he defends Hopper as “the role of his life.” His Emmy nominations, in 2017 and 2018, and Golden Globe nominations, in 2018, confirmed that the supporting part from twenty years ago had become a lead.
