Mirkwood in Stranger Things: the road where Will Byers disappears
Universe · Hawkins · Road
A road, a bike, woods, a lab farther on. In this article: what Mirkwood is, the night of November 6, the bike, the search, the woods and the lab rift, and where the name comes from. At the end, the road has a meaning.
Mirkwood is not a wood from a novel, it is a children's name. On November 6, 1983, Will Byers disappears on this road, by bike, between two houses.

Contents
A road, not a kingdom
Mirkwood appears on no sign. It is the name the children give to a crossing of forest roads. The map of Hawkins places it between the suburban neighborhood and the Byers house, at the edge of the woods. It is the axis that separates the lived-in town from the wild town.
One does not get lost there because the forest would be infinite. One gets lost there because it is the way home, the one a child takes by bike after a game. The first place the show locates with precision is that one: the search has to start somewhere.
The name travels farther than the road. The children baptize the map with their players' vocabulary, before the adults set police words on it. Mirkwood is the first of these baptisms.

The night of November 6, 1983
Will rides his bike home from a game at the Wheelers. On this road, something follows him. The night opens the series, and it is short: a path, a child, a chase. The season 1 recap takes up the following days. Here, one stays on the asphalt and the leaves.
He does not reach the house. That is what disappearing on Mirkwood means: the most ordinary trip of the week becomes the last one that can be dated. November 6 is also the night the lab goes off the rails. For Will, it is a game night, the eve of school.
The road does not show the creature whole. It shows the absence. A path one knows, and a boy who is no longer on it. The woods start just after.
Will's bike
The bike is found on the forest road. It is Hopper who finds it, and it is the first strong image of the search: a bike lying in the leaves, the reason one looks for Will. Not a lab clue. A child's object, in the wrong place.
The party's bikes are their cars. Will's, that evening, stops. The others will keep rolling. The road keeps the one that no longer rolls, for as long as it takes an adult to see it.
I do not describe the brand or the color beyond what these pages fix. A bike, leaves, a road. The police chief has enough to start. The town, not yet.
The search
The Hawkins police starts from this road because there is no other beginning. The police chief, volunteers, a forest that starts again at the end of the same path. Mirkwood becomes a perimeter before it is a fan name.
The children, for their part, already know what they call the crossing. The adults are looking for a missing person. The two maps overlay badly: one has a novel name, the other has a police report. The show lets them coexist.
Looking for Will means first redoing his route. From the Wheelers' toward his house, through the woods. As long as the bike is on the road, the story fits in a one-way trip that had no return.

The woods and the lab
The forest starts at the end of this path. The lab is very close: that evening, Will rides past on his bike, just before the creature. Mirkwood is not that complex. Mirkwood is the route of the houses. The north of the woods is another address, with another gate.
The first rift opens in the lab, in 1983, not on the asphalt where the bike is lying. Mixing the two up makes Will's road the factory of the phenomenon. The road is the place of the disappearance. The lab is the place of the crack. They touch through the trees, not through the same gate.
A few days later, another rift will open in a trunk, in these same woods. It is not the night of November 6. That night, the road stays a road, and the gate is still behind the fence to the north.
Where the name comes from
The name hides nothing: the children borrow it from the dark wood of a Tolkien novel. Not a municipal plaque, not a Byers family inheritance. A players' word, set on a crossing, because the forest of their game looks like the one they cross to get home.
It is the same gesture as naming a creature after a manual. The real town does not have those names. The children give them to it, and the show keeps them. Mirkwood exists because they said it, not because a sign came first.
After November 6, the name does not fade. It still names the path of the beginning. One can say it again without replaying the night: a road, two houses, a bike in the leaves, woods, and farther north a fence.
It is a small thing, and that is intended. No monument, no plaque, no detour. A crossing that children named, and that a police chief had to walk because a bike was lying there. The show starts there, at pedal height. The rest of the town comes after this interrupted ride, and not before. One does not add a plaque to make it exist more. The leaves around the bike do the rest.

Where is the bike?
Hopper finds it on the forest road, lying in the leaves. It is the start of the search.

No. The road links houses. The lab is to the north, in the woods, behind a fence. The first rift opens there, not on the asphalt.
Why does the search start there?
Because it is the way home, and the bike is there. There had to be a precise place so the town would know where to look.
