The Stranger Things pop-up in Paris: the shop on the Champs-Élysées, summer 2022

Guide · Paris · 2022

Spoiler warningThis article does not tell the plot.
In brief

A temporary shop, the first of its kind in Europe, one week before the second volume of season 4. In this article: the date and the address, the floor area and the capacity, the opening hours, how you got in, the sets cited by the visits, the cities that came before Paris, and why you can no longer turn up there as in June 2022.

The Stranger Things pop-up in Paris was not a permanent shop: an address on the Champs-Élysées, opened on 24 June 2022, for the length of a summer. This is what is known for sure: the place, the size, the hours, the booking, the sets described by the press, and what this address no longer is.

An opening set to the second volume

On Friday 24 June 2022, the shop opened at 44, avenue des Champs-Élysées. It was seven days before 1 July, the date of the second volume of season 4. The Paris press presented it as the countdown to that release: the first half of the season had already been available since 27 May, and the last two chapters were coming the following week.

The address was not picked at random on a street. The Champs-Élysées already gather the signs people visit for the place as much as for the purchase. The premises took two floors. Cédric Ross, in charge of the pop-up, said the works had started two months earlier.

It was not the first time the series put up a shop of this kind. New York, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles had come first. Paris was the first stop in Europe. The same person in charge spoke of a space meant for several generations, not only for those who had grown up with the first season.

400 square metres, two floors, 120 people

The floor area cited by the person in charge at the opening is 400 square metres. Another visit article wrote 440. We keep 400, because it is the figure given by the person who ran the place, not a passing estimate.

The indoor capacity was 120 people at the same time. That ceiling explains the queue and the slot system: a two-floor shop on a very busy avenue cannot take a free crowd without blocking the stairs and the sets.

The announced hours ran from 10 to 20, Monday to Sunday. On 24 and 25 June, the place stayed open until 21. Those are the first two days, a Friday and a Sunday, the ones when opening curiosity is strongest.

Nothing in these figures describes a lasting department store. 120 people is the size of a sitting, not of a shopping arcade. The setup was that of a visit: you come in, you walk through, you leave.

Free entry, a recommended slot

Entry was free. Booking a slot, on the shop’s site, gave priority access. People without a booking were accepted too: you then had to wait for a place to free up inside the capacity.

Several time slots were offered. The advice repeated by the practical articles was simple: come in the quiet hours if you had not booked, rather than at the Saturday opening.

That way of working looks more like an exhibition than a street shop. You did not push the door for a five-minute purchase. You took a time, went upstairs, walked the rooms, and then you could buy. Buying was not the condition of entry.

What the visits described

The reports speak of rebuilt sets, not a simple row of rails. A visit published in July 2022 cites three places: Joyce’s house, the mall of the summer of 1985, and the arcade. Photo spaces were planned, especially in the house.

The same account describes lights that start to flicker, a mood that tips, and an invitation to think of a song. It is a staging of the visit, not a season summary. We do not tell here what happens to the characters. We describe what the place had the visitor do.

On the objects, the press listed figures, clothes, caps, mugs, plush toys, bags, posters, vinyl records. Greg Lombardo, quoted in those articles, summed up the aim: leave with a piece of the series. No price is repeated here: the rates of a summer in 2022 say nothing about a stock today.

This shop must not be mixed up with the fan convention held in Paris in some years, nor with a restaurant menu, nor with a board game. It was a premises, on an avenue, for a short time.

Why Paris, and why at that moment

The calendar is readable. On 27 May 2022, the first seven chapters of season 4 go online. On 24 June, the shop opens. On 1 July, chapters 8 and 9 follow. The place serves as an antechamber to the second volume, not as a standing museum.

The American cities already visited showed that the format existed: a temporary premises, sets, an object to take away. Europe had not yet had that stop. Paris was chosen for this first passage, on the most visible avenue in the capital.

Another Paris event, earlier in the spring, had taken over a circus. It is not the same place, nor the same capacity, nor the same address. Mixing the two would make people believe in a single event. The shop on the Champs-Élysées starts on 24 June, not in May.

What this address no longer is

At the opening, Cédric Ross spoke of the summer and gave no closing day. One article wrote “until the end of the year”, another stuck to the summer. We do not settle an end date the sources do not share.

What can be said without inventing: it was not a standing sign. The address 44, avenue des Champs-Élysées, belongs to the summer of 2022. You no longer turn up there as on 24 June 2022, slot in your pocket, to see Joyce’s house rebuilt on two floors.

The pages that today list shops of the same kind talk about other cities. Paris appears there as a stop already done, not as a door open every day from 10 to 20. If a new Paris address were announced, it would have its own date. It does not erase the one from 2022.

For the visitor of now, the useful memory is therefore precise: a Friday in June, an avenue, 400 square metres, 120 people, free entry, sets and objects. The rest, the exact date of the last day, was not fixed in the opening articles. Better an admitted gap than an invented calendar.

Do not mix it up with the conventionThe fan meeting announced in Paris for some weekends is not this shop. One is held in an exhibition park, the other was a premises on the Champs-Élysées in 2022. Tickets, guests and hours are not the same.

A sweatshirt with the letters of the town, to take away with no slot.
