Who is Matthew Modine

Matthew Modine was born on March 22, 1959, in Loma Linda, California. He is the youngest of seven children. His mother, Dolores, was a bookkeeper. His father, Mark Alexander Modine, managed open-air movie theaters: drive-ins. The family lived in Utah for several years and moved every year or two. The drive-ins ended up demolished: the land was worth more than the screens.

At ten, he saw a report on the filming of Oliver! and decided to become an actor. A 1977 graduate of Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach, he moved to New York in 1980 to study with Stella Adler. It was also the year he married Caridad Rivera. Their daughter, Ruby Modine, born in 1990, is an actress.

This article follows the actor; the character has a page of his own. Here we look at how Kubrick's soldier became, nearly thirty years later, the show's white-haired Papa.

Birdy, Full Metal Jacket: the 80s

His first film role was in John Sayles's Baby It's You, in 1983. The same year, Robert Altman cast him in Streamers: at the Venice Film Festival, the Volpi Cup for Best Actor was shared by the film's entire cast, him included. Vision Quest, shot in 1983 and released in 1985, made him a high school wrestler.

In Alan Parker's Birdy (1984), he played the title role opposite Nicolas Cage: two childhood friends back from Vietnam, scarred for life. The film won the Grand Prix at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival. He also turned down the role of Maverick in Top Gun: the film seemed too pro-military for his politics.

Then came Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, released on June 26, 1987, in the United States and on October 21 in France. He played J.T. Davis, known as Joker, whom the French dub calls Guignol: the narrator, a Marine recruit turned military journalist in Vietnam. In 2019, he told CBS that the adventure with Kubrick had lasted two years.

According to the season 1 casting, he and Winona Ryder were also chosen for what they evoke: the movies of the show's era, the ones behind its 80s references.

From Memphis Belle to Oppenheimer

In 1988, he played a bumbling FBI agent in the comedy Married to the Mob, opposite Michelle Pfeiffer. In 1990, he led the cast of Memphis Belle, the fictionalized story of a B-17 bomber. In 1993, Robert Altman cast him again for Short Cuts, as Dr. Ralph Wyman: the whole cast received a special Golden Globe.

The same year, he played Dr. Don Francis in the TV movie And the Band Played On, which would earn him a Golden Globe nomination and an Emmy nomination. A second Golden Globe nomination followed in 1997, for What the Deaf Man Heard. In 1999, he made his first film as a director, If... Dog... Rabbit...

After that, he alternated between TV series and major films. He played Sullivan Groff, a corrupt developer, in the third season of Weeds, in 2007. Christopher Nolan cast him twice: as deputy commissioner Peter Foley in The Dark Knight Rises, in 2012, then as Vannevar Bush in Oppenheimer, released in France on July 19, 2023. The film won seven Oscars, including Best Picture.

He is also an activist, for cycling and within his union. He ran twice for president of SAG-AFTRA, in 2019 against Gabrielle Carteris, then in 2021 against Fran Drescher, who won with 52.5% of the vote to 47.5%. In September 2025, it was Sean Astin, Bob in season 2, who succeeded Fran Drescher.

Brenner in 1983: the white hair, the lab, the disappearance

His casting was announced on October 27, 2015. The character was then described as a brilliant, enigmatic scientist, possibly tied to a boy's disappearance. In 2019, Modine said he had turned the role down three times. He didn't want to play a villain, and what the Duffers described to him seemed very strange.

The look came from him. In the script, Brenner had a beard, a flannel shirt, jeans, and boots: a lumberjack. Modine said no, according to an interview picked up in January 2017. He wanted a clean-shaven man, a suit like Cary Grant's in North by Northwest, Robert Shaw's white hair in Battle of the Bulge, and cap-toe shoes like John Kennedy's.

On screen, Brenner runs Hawkins National Laboratory. He appears in all eight episodes of season 1, released on July 15, 2016. He hunts Eleven, who has escaped, and passes off a fake body as Will's. His test subjects call him Papa, as our feature on the numbered children explains.

In the last episode, “The Upside Down,” Hopper, the police chief, gets permission to enter the other world to look for Will; in exchange, he gives up Eleven. At the middle school, Eleven kills the agents with her mind and collapses. Brenner leans over her, speaks to her softly, and begs her to come home. The Demogorgon bursts out of the wall and lunges at him. The show leaves him for dead. By 1984, Dr. Owens has taken his place.

The 1986 return: the Nina Project and Brenner's death

In season 2, Modine appears only in fragments: a photo, flashbacks, an illusion. In “The Lost Sister,” a former employee, Ray Carroll, claims Brenner is alive. Eleven refuses to believe it. Later, Kali makes Papa appear in front of her. Season 2, episode 7 covers both scenes.

Brenner's return was meant to stay secret until release. But on January 27, 2021, his first day on set, a paparazzo photographed Modine in a convertible in Atlanta. On May 27, 2022, season 4 confirmed it: Brenner is alive.

With Owens, he runs the Nina Project, in a former silo in the desert. A tank plunges Eleven back into her memories of 1979 to give her back her powers. Brenner appears in flashbacks in the first three episodes, then in person in episodes 5 to 8. He makes Eleven relive the Rainbow Room, all the way to the massacre.

He dies in episode 8, “Papa”, released on July 1, 2022. Eleven wants to go back and help her friends; he puts her to sleep and fits her with an electric collar. Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan's troops attack the silo. Brenner carries Eleven up to the surface, where a sniper in a helicopter fatally shoots him. Eleven brings the aircraft down. Brenner deactivates the collar, tells her he only ever wanted to help her, and asks her to understand him. She says goodbye to him and leaves.

What Matthew Modine says about Brenner

In January 2017, the season 1 cast won the Screen Actors Guild ensemble award for a drama series. Modine was part of it. In 2022, he returned to the main cast for season 4.

He has often talked about his reluctance. To the Guardian, quoted by Looper on December 3, 2022, he said he turned it down, then gave in to the Duffers, who kept calling him back: he responded to their passion, and Brenner became a complex character. To CBS, in 2019, he said he preferred playing good people, people who solve problems.

He does, however, refuse to explain the character. To Vulture, quoted in the same Looper article, he said you don't have to explain your creation, a lesson he believes he learned from Stanley Kubrick. On Instagram, replying to a follower, he did float a theory, picked up by TVLine in July 2026: to found a program like that, Papa must have had gifts, maybe even powers. He pictures him as “000.”

On screen, Brenner dies alone in the sand, in 1986, after teaching Eleven to call him Papa. Opposite him, Millie Bobby Brown had been playing the role since 2015. The actor from Birdy, for his part, kept going.
