Who is Cara Buono
Cara Buono was born on March 1, 1971, in the Bronx, New York. She grew up in a working-class family of Italian descent, with two brothers and a sister. At twelve, she went on stage for the first time, in Spookhouse, a play by Harvey Fierstein. She attended LaGuardia High School, then Columbia University: a double major in English and political science, completed in three years.
Broadway welcomed her at eighteen: from December 1989 to January 1990, she appeared in The Tenth Man, at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. In 1991, an episode of CBS Schoolbreak Special, in which she played a teenage incest victim, earned her a Daytime Emmy nomination. Her first two films came in 1992. In Gladiator, she played the girlfriend of one of the two heroes; in Waterland, she acted opposite Jeremy Irons and Ethan Hawke.
She was born four days after Sean Astin, who plays Bob, and eight months before Winona Ryder. This article follows the actress. The character has her own profile: Karen Wheeler, from the pool to the bathroom.

From The Sopranos to Mad Men, the roles that made her name
Her early career ran through independent film: Kicking and Screaming, by Noah Baumbach, in 1995, then two films by Brad Anderson, Next Stop Wonderland in 1998 and Happy Accidents in 2000. She co-produced Two Ninas. In 1999, she wrote and directed a short film, Baggage, with Liev Schreiber and Minnie Driver.
Television made her a familiar face. From 2004 to 2005, she was Grace Foster, a paramedic, on Third Watch (known in France as New York 911), over twenty-two episodes. In 2006 and 2007, she joined the final season of The Sopranos: she was Kelli, the wife of Christopher Moltisanti, played by Michael Imperioli, for seven episodes.
Then came Mad Men. The fourth season aired from July to October 2010. She played Faye Miller, a consultant for the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce agency. Don Draper asked her out, dated her, then left her by announcing his engagement to Megan. Ten episodes were enough: in 2011, she was nominated for an Emmy, in the guest actress in a drama series category.
A pattern was already taking shape: mothers. In 2003, Ang Lee cast her as Edith Banner, Bruce Banner's mother, in Hulk. In 2010, she was Owen's mother in Let Me In, by Matt Reeves. The show's cast, season by season, picks up her story in 2015.
Karen in 1983 and 1984: the Maple Street mother
In September 2015, Cara Buono joined season 1 as Karen Wheeler. She was part of the main cast, as was Matthew Modine, who came on board a month later. Filming, in Atlanta, began in the fall. She was forty-four; her daughter was two, she recalled ten years later. The season 1 casting covers the other arrivals.
Karen is the mother of Nancy, Mike, and Holly, and the wife of Ted, the father asleep in his armchair. In November 1983, after Will disappears, she forbids her children to go out after dark. She brings a dish over to Joyce, while Holly sees the wall of Will's room move. In the basement, she finds a blanket fort and blond hairs, and doesn't understand. Season 1 is the only one in which she appears in all eight episodes.
The glass of wine was her idea. In 2019, the actress told the site Refinery29 that from season 1 on, she had asked the prop team for a glass of wine, as often as possible. Karen numbs herself a little: that's why she doesn't see a thing. On January 29, 2017, the season 1 cast received the Screen Actors Guild ensemble award, and she was part of it.
In 1984, in episode 9, “The Gate,” Billy Hargrove rings her doorbell while she is reading in her bubble bath. She answers in a robe, they flirt, and she tells him where to find the kids: at the Byers'.
Summer 1985 at the pool, then spring 1986
Season 3 came out on July 4, 2019. Karen appears in only six of its eight episodes, one of them by voice alone. In the first, “Suzie, Do You Copy?” she watches the lifeguard with other mothers, at the edge of the community pool. Billy pays her a compliment, then offers her swimming lessons that same evening, at a motel. She accepts. The community pool has its own article.
That evening, she puts on makeup and takes off her wedding ring. On her way downstairs, she hears Ted snoring and sees Holly asleep on his lap. She stays. Billy, for his part, drives toward the motel: something smashes his windshield, and a fleshy tentacle drags him into a basement. The next day, in “The Mall Rats,” Karen sees Billy slip into a room at the pool and follows him there to apologize. Billy turns his back on her and tells her to stay away from him.
The actress has her own reading of these scenes. In 2019, she explained that she gave Karen a sense of dissatisfaction: a woman who had given up on a lot of dreams. Opening the door to Billy, she said, meant opening the door to another image of herself. That same summer, Karen pushes her daughter, fired from the local paper, to finish her investigation. The profile of Nancy Wheeler tells that story.
In 2022, season 4, set in March 1986, was the only one in which the actress was billed in the recurring cast rather than the main cast. Karen stays oblivious to it all, right up to the earthquake, which she rides out holding Holly tight. When Mike gets back from his trip, she runs to hug him.

Season 5: Holly's night, and the hospital
On November 26, 2025, season 5's episode 2, “The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler,” gave the actress her big scene. On November 3, 1987, Karen has had a fight with Ted over Holly's imaginary friend. She has been drinking, and runs a bath to ABBA's “Fernando.” A Demogorgon comes through the ceiling of Holly's bedroom. The little girl, played by Nell Fisher, runs to hide in the bathroom.
Mother and daughter plunge into the tub and hold their breath underwater while the creature breaks down the door. Ted rushes in, a golf club in his hand; the monster leaves the bathroom and throws him through a wall. Trapped with Holly, Karen smashes a wine bottle and uses it as a blade, again and again, before the creature slashes her. Holly is taken. The recap of season 5, episode 2 follows the rest of the night.
At the hospital, her throat is too badly injured for her to speak. Mike and Nancy hand her a notepad. She writes that the teacher saw Holly talking to herself, that Mr. Whatsit wears a pocket watch and a vest, then she spells out his first name: Henry. Four episodes later, in “Escape from Camazotz,” she rips out her IV and blows up oxygen tanks in a dryer, on top of the demodogs. Lucas, Robin, and Vickie are saved.
In the 1989 epilogue, Karen has recovered, with scars on her neck and chest. On graduation day, she hugs Mike and tells him she is proud of him.
What the actress says about the role, and her other projects
She sees more in Karen than a clueless '80s mom. In December 2025, in an article on the news site PhillyVoice, she was blunt: Karen is an alcoholic. Having the wine become the weapon against the Demogorgon, she said, was very satisfying to her. In it, she also recalled that being a mother had been her dream.
For the fight against the Demogorgon, she wanted a battle cry. According to the site Popverse, which draws on an interview she gave to Vulture, she was thinking of Aliens and asked to end the line on an insult. She shot one take of it, which exists somewhere, she said. In late November 2025, she joked on X that she had trained by opening the jars nobody else at home could open.
During the show's run, she worked elsewhere: Gamemnae in Supergirl, from 2019 to 2021, over nine episodes, then Gail Carter in The Girl from Plainville, in 2022. In 2024, she returned to Law & Order, twenty-eight years after her first appearance on that crime series.
She lives in Greenwich Village, New York, with Peter Thum, the founder of Ethos Water, whom she married in 2008, and their daughter, Esme, born in 2013. Karen ended the show wounded, but still standing.
